I can remember when they chopped the top floors of the old college it must have been the one of the tallest buildings in the centre of Rawtenstall then.

It was like The Krypton Factor course walking from the Bus Station round to the college. There were umpteen opportunities to get run over if you hadn't quite woken up properly!
Strange place to build a college in the first place I suppose? On a busy roundabout.

Re: New photo category - Demolition!

Thanks for the photographs of the college demolition. It's quite sad for me as I spent 28 years working in the College Library before we all moved over to Accrington.
I worked there when they took the top 2 floors off and we all worked in the Hall and had to wear hard hats (you would not have been able to do that now)
When the college closed we had a reunion of the staff who had worked there over the years which was quite a trip down memory lane.
Sorry to see it go but then again it had to as it was falling down around us whilst we were still there.

Re: New photo category - Demolition!

When the college was built there was no big roundabout surely it predates the by-pass?

Re: New photo category - Demolition!

The Official opening of the College was 20th October 1956 although part of the college (The part on the left as you walked down the car park) was going before that. I have the opening ceremony leaflet and it was a very grand affair. I did ask the College Principal if I could blow it up on it's 50th Anniversary but he wouldn't let me.

The College was built before the by-pass and was never built to be put next to a road that would have the weight of the lorries we have today going past at a regular basis. The building quite literaly shook every time one went past and the cracks in the floor and the walls were opening up over the years at an alarming rate.

Although I loved working there I accepted we had to go due to the state of the building
Yes I do have photographs and would be happy to post them on the site I just have to find time but seeing as it's half term next week I will have a go

Re: New photo category - Demolition!

Have dug out 5 pictures but not sure where I should post them.
Three of them are when the College was being built and the other two whilst still standing.
Which category should I post them in
