Lee,
has it had some sort of information board on it in the past?

I'm not sure, to be honest.

Now you mention it though, it could well be a rundown info board as opposed to a cross!

Wadey, sorry not it's not there.

Lynne, You were close with a reservoir as JohnnyX is right - it's up above Clowbridge Reservoir.

Technically, I suppose it's not actually in Rossendale and is in Burnley, but I'm sure you'll let me off.

Nice one. Is Manchester Road to the right?

Yeah, that's right.

It runs behind the wall you can just make out straight ahead, below the farm buildings.
To the very far right of the picture is Limy Lane.

I'll let you off because Clowbridge Reservoir is 1/2 in Rossendale and 1/2 in Burnley. :suspect:

Where the photo was taken is in Rossendale.

I need to get out to more places.
Looking through my photos for a 'Where in Rossendale', they all seem to be up at Clowbridge!

I'm guessing from this map (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=382500&y=427500&z=3&sv=382500,427500&st=4&ar=N&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf) then, that the black lines in the reservoir are the boundary lines?
Rossendale being to the right and under the lines, Burnley to the north (where the blue footprint is.).

Are the continuous black lines top right the National Grid? Did anyone ever remember the name of the pub that became the Chinese? Due to road works am avoiding the area at the moment.

Oh yeah, never spotted them. They definately look like it, as there's plenty of pylons in that area.

I'm sure someone said the Beijing used to be called The Bridge - don't quote me though.

Here's a photo of the cross that I took just a few weeks ago.

Did we ever find out who he (I'm assuming it's a He) was and why there's a cross on the moors?

It was put up by Samuel Compston in1902. He was a former Rawtenstall Mayor and local historian. There's some stones nearby that mark two ancient crosses Higher and Lower Cross. They were linked to ancient routes joining abbeys. There is a good description of the area in Ian Goldthorpe's book Rossendale Rambles (http://astore.amazon.co.uk/rossendaleonline-21/detail/094773807X/202-2697738-9009412).
