Mid Pennine Gallery’s next exhibition, Frames, explores the relationship between the viewer and film frames.

To watch a film on a cinema or television screen, the film frame is magnified considerably, yet Andrew Bracey’s work brings it back to the original miniature view.

Bracey, who lives and works in Manchester, describes himself as a filmaholic, he explains, ‘it all began when I was working as a cinema projectionist and I started thinking how the size of the film passing through the projector was the true size rather than the more commonly held perception of it being large on the cinema screen. I started looking for images in films that were incidental to and not part of the overall narrative and are what I call non-moments, for instance a plane taking off, and then painted those images in miniature’.

Bracey allows the viewer to ponder which film each image comes from, yet deliberately does not title each individual image but rather selects from lists such as most profitable films in history, critics’ favourite films and from TV polls.

Even though Bracey has seen many hundreds of films for this artwork, there are still films to be watched resulting in omissions and again it is up to the viewer to guess or debate which films are missing.

Bracey paints his miniature stills from film onto an empty rectangle of 35mm leader film: the preliminary strips that count the seconds of the start of the film.

These strips of film create the blank canvas on which Bracey can create his own reflections on popular culture.

The exhibition runs from 27th October – 15th December 07 at Mid Pennine Gallery, Yorke St, Burnley.
