View Full Version : Police Station Move.
So, the plan is to move Rawtenstall police station to the site of the former Richard Cort showroom in Waterfoot
But, does anyone remember where Rawtenstall police station was before it's current location? ;)

Trick question!...
It was in the general location of where it is now and that is on Lord Street, adjacent to Kay Street in Rawtenstall. Has been for years...
Matt.
Not quite ......
I was at a different site.
The building is still there as something else.

It depends on how far your going back then. My dad was involved within the police for over 20 years and throughout that time it was always on Lord Street. If your going further back than that then you will have to be rather on the old-side to know where it was...

I may be wrong then. :bonk:
I remember a Police Station at the end of North Street.
As you travel up Kay Street, the current Police Station is on the left.
Just after it turn right into North Street, just before the Post Office.
The building is still there and being used by the Probation Service.
Would you be able to check that with your Dad.
Cheers.

Yeah, can do that, might be seeing the folks later on today. The building you're referring to may well have been an extension to the main police station which was on Lord Street perhaps...I'm not sure, but will hear it from the horses mouth. What time frame are you thinking of here by the way?
I think its closed down now as well as a Probation Service, last time I walked down that street there were boards up against the windows. It's opposite Key Street Church, further up from the Post Office, or next building up really.

I certainly remember it being used in the 70's when I was a teenager.

I walked past the building on Saturday morning on my way to the post office to pick up a parcel. I noticed the windows were boarded up, but the door was open and some people were walking in and out - probably squatters. :)
As far as my dad can remember the building your on about was used for police storage. The primary station has always been in the same place with obviously building improvements over the years.
Matt.
Just did a bit more research earlier.
The present Police Station was built in 1974.
I don't know if it was built on the site of a previous Police Station.
It probably didn't appear over night so they would have to have used somewhere else in the meantime. Maybe that is where I got my story from.
I moved to Rawtenstall, as a young lad in the late 60s which would tie in with me remembering them using the building on North Street.
I did think of popping in to the Police Station and ask a 'bobby' if they knew anything about its history ...... but then again looking at the age of them these days, I don't think any are old enough to remember as far back as the last England Football team's win. :D
So, is there anyone out there who remembers the history of Rawtenstall Pollice Station prior to 1974??????
Cheers.
Spoke with my parents today.
Before the police station was built in its current location in 1974, there were houses on that site.
The old police station was indeed on North Street behind the Post Office.
Case solved Sherlock!

We will have to agree to disagree here to be honest, because while the building your commenting on may well have been used as some sort of police storage/office building, I disagree that houses were present where the current police station is.
My dad would have been in the service for about 2 years in 1974 and was based at Rawtenstall, where the current building is now.
:suspect: :disappointed:
