Didn't know what they were, so thanks to 3dom for that link.
Quite like them lamps..... until I saw the price - £95 squids for a lamp.
I have one of these from what my granddad had, I think the shop Instore in bury do a cheap version which uses them small candle things in side them.

Thanks for all your help.Mentioned "Tilley Lamp" to a few at work, and today one of them brought me the part needed- a mantle,So now its up and glowing. Got it from a car boot for £3,always wanted one but £90+,a bit steep.Good for camping etc and when the power goes off which is fairly regular over here in cuckoo land. thanks again.
They give off a really nice light, my uncle had them on his boat.

Not sure if it's the same thing but the caravan dealers sell 'mantles' for certain types of caravan lights. Might be worth a try for future requirements.
Elcie, thanks for that.Never thought of caravan dealers.Rossendale seems to be blessed with brainboxes, and its got a good write up in todays MEN.
Rossendale seems to be blessed with brainboxes,
I think historically this old adage applied to Valley folk cos we didn't get out much........'necessity is the mother of invention'...........or some such thing :D

for the length of time they last - thats good value!
I have 2 - a X246A (which was made between 1961 and 64) which i picked up at a jumble stall at a classic car stall for £5, its pump was missing, and the glass was broken - i got the replacement parts off ebay, and the camping shop at castlecroft in Bury.
the other is a late 60s/early 70s X246B that my parents had in the loft.
both work great - all the parts available still fit the old lamps - not bad, it's design virtually unchanged for over 40 years!
might be worth changing the rubber seals on the vapourisor and valve - again available either from tilley, ebay and camping shops.
apsolutly fantastic for camping - heat and light all in one, something lovely about sitting in the early spring, or mid autum, listening to the hiss of the lamp, feeling the warmth while reading a book in the glow of the lamp. :D

Are these things made of brass?

The model numbers tend to be stamped on the base of the lamp.
the paraffin bit is brass usually painted or chromed, up to the 246As they had brass pumps, and alloy on the models after that. and the top is porcelain enamel - the colour depends on the age and model - for ours the older lamp has a brown enamel top, and the newer one has a black top.
the metal bit around the glass is either steel or brass depending on the model
Talking about trying to buy defunct parts for old things.....................
Does anyone know of anywhere I can get a really old barometer mended?
It's been entrusted to me (passed down through the family) and it fell off the wall the other week and broke.:(
Busted barometer? Try this bloke:- RSM Antique Restorations, Blackpool. 01253 623839. You could have a go on the Big One whilst he gets on with the repair! Hope you get it fixed.
