Took me a while to place it, but finally got it. Opposite the pub/restaurant near the bottom of Goodshaw lane. What was the big building opposite? I can see St Johns school at the top of the picture and the big house to the rear and below the school, I used to deliver groceries there when I were a lad, "Granville" with my little cart. B-)

The building across was called Union buildings.

When Rossday sees this he will be able to provide a bit more info on this building:thumbs: .

I can't remember the buildings being there they may have been knocked down before is was born, I do remember the St. Johns School before that was knocked down as well as the public toilet built into the wall.

The row was derelict in the mid-late 1960's when we used to mess about in them. :)

Great pictures and research.

It's opposite the White Bull pub. Any ideas as to when it was demlished? Johnnyx says it was there mid-60s.

I'd guess that they were demolished in the early 70's. :scratch_head:

After reading other peoples posts in this thread I think they were just derelict and part of the slums clearance.

I remember the Union Buildings on Burnley Road from being at St John's school in the early 1950's and they were derelict then. There was a shop at the end nearest the White Bull but I don't who was the last in it.

It was probably cheaper to knock them down then do them up.

One abiding memory I have of the building is that either there was no troughing or it was blocked.

Every time it rained it was like a waterfall down the pavement.

I am sure this shop used to be at the end of Union Buildings behind the White Bull.

Dunno for certain. I passed my 11+ (remember them?) and went to BRGS, one of only two to pass that year. It would be around '67 / '68 when I moved on. I don't think the school was open too long afterwards.

St John's School closed in 1972 when Crawshawbooth Primary School open and was pulled down shortly after.

The schools that closed when Crawshawbooth CP opened were Loveclough C. of E., Goodshaw Baptist, Rakefoot Wesleyan and St John's.

I remember going to play school at Goodshaw Baptist i think the old school at Goodshaw Baptist was converted into a play school when the school closed, I then went to Crawshawbooth CP about 1975/76, I remember getting a Queen's Silver Jubilee Mug in 1977 which i still have.

Stumbled across this older thread and interesting it is too. Yes these schools did merge into the new Crawshawbooth CP which was built on most of Moller Ring. The Goodshaw school though was Goodshaw County Primary. Although next to the Baptist chapel it was never affiliated with it and the two did not have a link apart from being very close together!

Whilt I attended this school the major event that I remember was that Lady Penelopes FAB 1 Rolls Royce was brought to the school on the back of a wagon for the kids to view. I think it something to do with Frank Slater who was in the haulage business. Loads more stories but don't we all :)

Oops:o - your right there, though as kids we always called it 'Baptist School'. Should have known better having gone there to Goodshaw Youth Club in the late '50s and early 60s'
