As it's the summer holidays and people are obviously looking for ideas for days out in and around Rossendale, I thought I'd see what you have planned and any ideas.

Here's a few places off the top of my head:

In Rossendale

Rossendale Museum / Whittaker Park
Weavers Cottage
Fudge Factory - Bacup
ELR
Walking
Helmshore Textile Museum (Reopens September, but please check)

Beyond Rossendale (No more than an hour away)

Jodrell Bank
Manchester Science Museum (very good and free!)
Eureka - Halifax
Film and Photography Museum - Bradford
The Lowry at Salford Quays (museums for Dad, shopping for Mum!)
Sellafield - Cumbria
Imperial War Museum North in Manchester

Hope that helps and if you have any other suggestions, please just add them below.

Just back from a day out in Lytham St. Annes. Lovely warm, if slightly windy day. Costs no more than your petrol. Took my 2 boys and their friends and they spent all day on the very clean beach - digging, flying the kite and swimming in the (Very cold) sea!! :suspect:

There is also Blackpool zoo and the Park next door which has a boating lake, minature railway etc which are really good.

Nice one, Faye - sounds like a grand day out!
Any snorkelling on the beach?

Not so sure about swimming in the sea though!

Another I thought of outside Rossendale is Wigan Pier. Not been for years, so am unsure how much of it free these days.

Just checked here: http://www.wlct.org/Tourism/Wiganpier/opening.htm and it's £5.25 for adults and £4.25 for concessions or £14.75 for a family site ticket.
Seems pretty reasonable that.

If you are over Wigan way, another great place to visit is Haigh Hall (pronounced Hay Hall) and Country Park.

We have been quite a few times over the past few years.

There are miles and miles of wooded walks as well as managed walled gardens to potter through.

There is quite a nice 'miniature' railway to ride on.

In the Summer months there is nearly always something on in the grounds.

Cheers.

It was supposed to open in October 2007.

This week it has been announced that after recently finding rotten timbers in the roof, it now won't be opening until January 2008 at the earliest.

Thanks.

That's a shame.

Quite a few people I've spoken to never knew it was there and really fancy visiting.
I hope they open on Sunday's when they re-open, as the number of people at the Farmers Market would probably pop in and have a look round.

peeps should check that Wigan Pier is still open, I heard that they were closing down as of April last year.

It was a great place to visit especially the school room, so make sure you call before you head over there.... If it is still open then its well worth the drive, just remember to pick up some Uncle Joes Mint balls, which are made in the town... They're delicious.... and have a pie barm!!!

Can I please advise about Jodrell Bank?
And please don't take this as a negative.

I went there when I was about 8 {1980  } and I remember having a really good day out.

We had a full tour and stared in awe at these machines that were apparently printing out things that related to "space noise", which - being 8 years old - we agreed between ourselves it must be aliens and martians and flying saucers and the like.

Recently, me and my girlfriend decided to go back - only about 6 weeks ago.
We drove all the way there and paid our money, only to find out AFTER they'd let us in that everything had been demolished to make way for a brand new site being built {months off completion yet}.

The Planetarium and Exhibitions were all gone.

We were gutted :(

On a plus note - I think the amount of money they are spending means it should be awesome when its re-opened.

Just don't want people to drive all that way to be disappointed.
Check their website for updates.

Hope that helps.

Cheers for that, Tony.

You'd be pretty gutted if you'd driven all that way, only to be told it'd been knocked down!

I've always wanted to go, so will have to wait for the new one.

It's not the Telescope itself.

It's the Visitor Centre, etc.

They are building a new one.

Cheers, I was wondering when they would've knocked it down, as it had escaped my radar. :p

Definitely not the "big dish thingy" as my nephew calls it.

Nope, thats still there for sure.
Got a pic of it with my mowbly.

In the rain :(

The whispering dishes are pretty impressive though.

2 dishes that are about 50 feet apart.
You whisper into one of them, and the person listening at the other one can hear you plain as day!
Very impressive - even to a 35 yr old ha ha

If you are going to Eureka there is a lovely park in Halifax called Shibden Park, they have a miniature train too.

There are some great walks in Rossendale and beyond, Musbury used to be a favourite as a child.

Other places we used to go with our children when they were younger include Five Rise locks at Bingley, Skipton (market), Todmorden Park, Hebden Bridge, bike rides along the canal tow paths ( as it's flat you can do a lot more miles than around here)....Edisford Bridge was another favorite of mine as a child and our two loved it too.
