View Full Version : Dog Dieting
Mums little (fat) Westie "Jocky" has to drop 3Kg in weight before he has an operation for a ruputured cruciate ligament in early March, as advised by the vet we have dropped his food intake by two thirds with no treats but he is really hungry and unhappy - howling and tapping his bowl for over a week now :( Does anyone think giving him some fresh plain popcorn with his dinner to bulk it up (no butter or anything!) would be bad for him? I can only see it is fiber and can't hurt him, it is so sad to see him so sad, Any Comments welcome. :walkies:
Be very careful with the popcorn if you use it for the dog as it may have some of the husk in which is cellulose which dogs can't digest! Try some cold boiled rice instead :)

 Get yourself to Lidl or somewhere similar and get a nice big bag of frozen mixed veg..............Our little Staffie is the fussiest eater ever but when we put vegetables down for him he, pardon the pun, woofs it down. No fat but plenty of bulk to it. And Tesco/Asda do trays (120g) of basic cooked chicken for about £1.38 that can be added to give the veg a bit more taste.
We tried bulking his dinner up with cabbbage but the wallpaper is peeling off the walls with the day after smells.

Yes, we found that was a problem after George tucked into the left over cabbage from last nights tea.....and he really loves sprouts but I'm used to the smell cos Mrs Rex loves them too.........

hope his op goes ok hun
try giving him a large cow bone to lick and take his mind off eating.
Thanks all! Jocky now eats his plain popcon with no problems, we haven't tried the mixed veg ideas yet but will, he seems to see the popcorn as a treat, we have stuck to his (vet suggested diet) which is a 66% reduction on his feed! and so far can't really tell if he has lost any weight as the local crane is in use :) , but we really hope he is losing some weight, a sad, hungrey dog and a piece of buttered toast is heartbraking
I hope all goes well for him it must be really hard for you surely he must have lost some weight, have you tried weighing him on your bathroom scales..just get on holding him then get on them by yourself and the difference in weight is what he weighs?
I agree with Hillbilly. Ask the butcher for a marrow bone, a big solid one with not much he could break off (not sure if you can get thigh bones anymore) The fact that he is gnawing away will safisfy his urge to eat. If unsure ask your vet for advice.
there is special food for dieting doggies , may this can help
Jocky dropped his weight by the 3kg and has now not needed surgery, he is much happier and still loves his popcorn (No butter or sugar!) Thanks everyone for your advise.
