Some boozers in the Valley in no particular order are:-

The Crown in Bacup. Great beer and food ok for a teatime session. Not as good as it was when Trevor and Kathy had it but still ok.

Kimberly Club, Stacksteads. Fab beer, great locals. A real hidden gem.

Robin Hood, Helmshore. Great beer. Warm, welcoming traditional Lancashire pub with log fires.

Griffin, Haslingden. Great beer but a bit spartan. Ambience sometimes spolied by a very foul-mouthed crowd at the bar who churn out the vilest language continually.

Duke of Wellington, Grane Road. Cheap but neither good nor cheerful. Very cheap carvery though not good. Screaming kids wall-to-wall.

Holden Arms, Haslingden. Unmemorable.

George & Dragon, Bacup. Beer ok. Landlady trying hard.

New Inn, Bacup. Great if you want a punch-up. Scrotes.

The Farmers Glory, Roundhill Road, Haslingden. Now a restaurant. Food good, service good but I wonder how well it will do. Seems a bit pricey for the area though we enjoyed our visit.

Craven Heifer, Burnley Road, Rawtenstall. Not bad. Full range of Moorhouses beers in good condition. Lively crowd, mixed ages. Worth a visit.

Last night we went 'over the tops' to Littleborough to the Red Lion. Not been for 15 years but well worth the vist. 5 real ales. I have the blissful situation of having a wife that will drive me to drink!

It is indeed shut. I showed up on the closing night and bumped into a couple of other RO guys. They were selling off all the booze at a pound a pint. I bought loads of spirits and following spending £7 on seven pints of Staropramen, I ended up buying the pub piano!

I've had it tuned and tweaked, but one or two notes are starting to go out slightly already. Now I'm sober, if anyone wants it, buy me a pint and collect it and it's yours!

The landlady/restaurant manager was very welcoming and the food was excellent though close to nouvelle. The atmosphere was hushed and almost reverential. Very unusual for the area where big plates piled high with cheap rubbish is almost the norm. I think they really got it wrong though it may have done well in Manchester.

When it was a 'proper pub', I once had the embarrasment of sending THREE pints back as they were more like Sarsons than Marstons. I got the usual, "Well nobody else has complained." It was not just 'on the turn', it was vile. The landlady/barperson, an amazingly sourfaced Scots lady was livid. We never went back again until it became a restaurant. Like most people, I tend not to complain and just order summat different next time but you didn't need to taste this stuff, you could smell that vinegar odour as soon as you walked in through the door. Mind you, thinking about it, it may have been the landlady's facial expression that turned the beer.

It would make a cracking boozer. It is in a lovely location with a great beer-garden and pond. Let's hope someone can turn it round. Really good pubs are getting increasingly hard to find,
