One problem with me being retired is that I have so much to do that I wonder how I ever found the time to work?

I can 2nd that, just recently finished my work on the Greater Accrington Heroes, what started out as 127 pages of names found whilst researching Accrington Pals for Bill Turner, has now finished up as 927 pages of info on 12750, men and women (incl; 2800 thumbnail pics of them) who took the Kings Shilling 1914-1919, three volumes bound in red leather, that was on top of the work I promised Bill Turner I would complete for him as he lay dying in July 2007, my daughters & grandson took my books on the Accrington Pals Casualties on July 1/5th 1916, 638 casualties out of the 720 men of the fighting strength of the battalion, The Mayor of Bapaume was so delighted that he gave my grandson a medal for me, which granted me the freedom of Bapaume in France. A damned good job I was retired, I wouldn't managed all that otherwise

Re: What are people up to right now

I have a passion for history, particular social and economic from around 1750 on wards, which encompasses the First World War.
I used to find it difficult to envisage the numbers killed or wounded during some of the battles until I started equating the figures with football crowds. For example if the figure quoted was around 75k I used to close my eyes and picture a full house at Old Trafford, the horror of those figures really hit home when seeing all those people.
What a waste, many of my grandmother and Grandfathers brothers went, luckily they all returned unharmed. My grandfather was a medical orderly, he used to hate me playing with toy guns or weapons. We had a pair of super binoculars that a German Officer gave him for looking after him..

Aye stoo666. The casualty figures take some folk by surprise, many either don't believe me or don't want too, Accrington's war memorial has 879 names on it, 14 are double entry's, 19 spelling mistakes, 68 names missing including 9 Accrington Pals, and one man who didn't die.
One of the worst casualty rates I've ever come across was when we were in Scotland on holiday some 20 years ago and there was a big plaque over a town hall door way,
---------------- "Seaforth Highlander's" -----------------
"In Memory of the 8432 men of the 10 Battalions of the
Regiment who gave their lives in the Great War"

When you know that it takes 1000 men to make a Battalion, that's one hell of a casualty rate for any Regiment, Them lads knew how to fight and showed no fear, when the pipes cracked up jerry kacked his pants, they knew they were in for a right shelacking, and the Ladies from Hell, gave no quarter, and took no prisoners, they feared the Scots more than they did the Ghurkas.

But that's not all when you think about it, how many other men who served in the Seaforths ended up being wounded and either finished up in Labour units, or were discharged.

My grandfather kept a diary from joining up until the end. He wasn't in the pals but he (visited) Bapaume.
