Re: words??

Good post.

There was a mention of 'swealing' on another thread. That, and 'flitting', do seem exclusive to the north.

I can't think of any that haven't been appropriated already - such as the verb 'to fettle'. I've heard that one used 'ironically' outside of the north. I usually sigh, pull up a chair and explain just what a 'fettler' was.

I say that! I say that! You're right, Jan. It's an oldie but goodie.

For years I thought "You daft ha'porth" was something to do with small apes. In my head it was 'Apeth'.

I didn't make the connection for 'yonks'.

Re: words??

We used to say 'Norrie' for a brick (we all know why) and I still use it - quite deliberately - in the weirdest contexts.

Re: words??

When I was a teenager, 'dogging' meant to mock someone. Eg: "He were dogging him all night."

It means something completely different now!

Ah, an interesting one because it widens the discussion. 'Addled' is a perfectly good word that just isn't heard very often these days in conversation, and if it is, it places the user in a certain time or place.

Perhaps northerners tend to hold onto words and phrases that are anachronistic. What I mean is, that the word itself isn't unique to an area, but its use is.

Er, out of all the viewers and lurkers on this site, surely there must be some Socio-Linguistics experts out there? Come on, Chomsky.
