In 1979 the country was flat on its back and dying. Somebody had to do what she did, when she did it. Her government could have done more to mitigate the effects of their actions, though.

However, if nobody had done anything to get the country back on its feet, and nobody else was doing anything, then Poland and Lithuania may well now be worrying about the implications of half a million Britons seeking work in their countries.

Re: Margaret Thatcher

I remember thinking that 'King Arthur' had to be stopped along with all the other people bringing the country to it's knees. He was a fanatical troublemaker out for his own ends and got many people whipped up into a frenzy when they should really have been thinking straight.
I admired her for her conviction but she did go too far towards the end and had to be replaced. I wish though that we had someone else as strong willed as her to stand up for us. We're being sold down the swanny now and the country's in a right old state
.
I can also remember working in the factory and being ostracized for 'daring' to agree with some of her policies.....democracy?

Work in the TED Heath days prior to Thatcher "King Arthur of the miners held the country to ransom.Electricity was rationed to three days a week If you were working you had to go into work when the electric was on ,you could be working Frid/sat/sun Then you were laid off. When you were at home not earning any money The electric went off No tele no Food if you were on electric I had a camping stove and a load of candles. Thatcher sorted all this out so its never happened again. that someone could hold the country to ransom.

Re: Margaret Thatcher

Just some FACTS concerning the 3 day week.
On the 13th November 1973 the Government declared a state of emergency
following an overtime ban by electricity and coal workers.
6 days later it was annouced that petrol and fuel deliveries would be reduced by 10 % following cutbacks in production by Arab states and the effect of the coal miners` ban on overtime.
Heath announced measures to conserve electricity ..... the 3 day week.
Workers on a 3 day week would be entitled to one day`s unemployment benefit in the second week and two days`benefit in subsequent weeks.
An offer which could have given the miners between 40p and 70p more each week addtional to the offer at the time was rejected by the Goverments Pay Board.
The 3 day week for industry offically started on 7th Jan 1974.
9th Feb 1974 the miners went on strike. The strike lasted until the 11th March 1974.
Heath lost the election at the end of Feb.

The fight for the future of mining in the UK was 10 years off.

Re: Margaret Thatcher

I have only just seen this thread. I think the posts people have made are interesting. I didn't particularly like Margaret Thatcher at the time and I don't think she had everything right.

What have we got now though? Totalitarianism and 1970s style non-productivity!

We need someone like Thatcher to sort it out.
