Stuff that I like

I spend hours trawlin through You Tube listenin to music an watchin videos of bands an stuff, an not just stuff from my youth.

I'm lucky in the fact that I've got two kids who are both into music, so I get to hear a lot of stuff that's pretty new an up to date, last year I got into some pretty heavy dubstep stuff, stuff that I wouldn't normally get the chance to listen to. Anyways, it works both ways because my son now listens to a lot of my old albums (I bought him a set of decks last year, I haven't played any albums for about25/30 years but they sounded better than any cd does, I still sit on my bed readin the sleeve notes, you just don't get that with cd's do you?)

Anyway, just thought it would be a good thread to stick some links on here an see what everyone else listens to, hope this works, I'm gonna try with this video of Chuck Berry an Keith Richards in a studio, I love this kinda backstage stuff, especialy seein Chuck tellin Keith how to play somethin.

I know it's an old clip an I've been harpin on about new stuff an thatl, but if I get this first link right, I'll post some new stuff as well, there's a band that I think are gonna be massive called Alabahma Shakes, I think they're brilliant.

Re: Stuff that I like

I loved the Pistols, saw em when they reformed, my mum would never have let me see em when I was younger, John Lydon still has whatever it is by the bucketfull, as proved in this version of Pretty Vacant in front of a tame studio audience.

He really doesn't give a toss what anyone thinks, an I like that.

Whooops, don't think you can embed videos onto the site, well I can't manage it anyway.
Just click on the link, it's worth it.

Re: Stuff that I like

This version of Johnny B Goode kills every other version, includin the original.

I still listen to a lot of Hendrix since I bought my son a set of decks, thank god my missus never carbooted my old albums.

There are longer recordings of this same track, I just like the live shots of Hendrix playin this.

Re: Stuff that I like

This band made some fantastic tunes, although I 'm not as keen on the later stuff, but this is a fantastic song.

If you lived through that time - as you and I did - then it is very, very difficult to explain just how big a deal the Pistols were. They were a very real threat to the established order. There was a lot of violence around back then, all stoked by the usual tabloids.

I'm not going to go off on one of my essays, but when I think of punk (and I do very often) then I'm also thinking about the writing (the fanzines, the Burchill and Parsons years at the NME); being turned onto a lot of underground art; German electronic music; fashions that petered down to the high street; painting; film; theatre...it's a long list.

But I always remember the fear of punk as being a corrupter of youth; the exact opposite of what it actually was.

Here's a tale. The Pistols nearly played Bacup. Don't ask me for a source yet. I dare say either of the Kershaws read RoL occasionally, and if anybody knows more about this it would be Andy although he may have been at Leeds a little later than the Anarchy tour (when it was banned from Rochdale.)

I often listen to Never Mind the Bollocks, and strangely a lot of people are reluctant to acknowledge that it's a very, very good album musically.

Of course, it wasn't long before the record companies, realising that there was something in this punk thing, created an overnight deluge of really crep 'punk' bands. The week before, these chancers had been playing Rubettes covers down the pub, but they sniffed out an opportunity. Punk became a cartoon bogeyman with Kenny Everett and Sid Snot and all that old silly stuff.

We'd moved on.

Blackburn King George's Hall, me and John Goldring having schlepped over on a school night to see Buzzcocks and John really wanting to check out the support band - Joy Division. I was a bit sceptical but it was an epiphany. Now, that was a night.

Re: Stuff that I like

I haven't played that Pistols album for years. I've heard all the songs on it over the years, but I've never listened to the album in its entirety for at least 25 years. I've just been havin a bit of a mooch through some of my old records an I came across a Pistols bootleg thats got the entire "Never mind the bollocks ......" recordings with different outakes on em all, I remember buyin that one at Aflecks palace in Manchester....

I sold a load of my old stuff a few years ago on Ebay, they were all catalogued an all in them clear plastic sleeves, I'd had em sat in a spare bedroom for years an thought I'd never get round to listenin to em again, Ramones, Killing joke, X Ray spex, The Clash, loads of stuff, coloured vinyl, limited editions, twelve inch singles......

Wished I'd kept em now, they were a big part of my teenage years captured on vinyl.

I've still got a few though, think I'm gonna go time travellin tonight..

Re: Stuff that I like

Just saw last week on Sounds of the 70's Meatloaf doing a rendering of Paradise by the Dashboard light in 1978. Watched about 6 times so far brilliant much better than later renderings
