I will see this, but I do tend to agree with some reviewers that a good opportunity has been missed by Shane Meadows.

I absolutely love the music, but I saw part of their set 23 years ago and was horribly unimpressed, something I've been kicking myself over ever since. Having said that, the venue was famously bad for acoustics (Ally Pally) and also, with the best will in the world, I have a cat that sings better than Ian Brown. Taking the two together, I suppose I just didn't 'get' it that night.

So, a curiosity rather than a serious documentary; one to make me feel old and possibly one to reinforce my conviction that band reunions are rarely, if ever, a good thing.

But I still have to see it.

Quote:
Shane Meadows’ The Stone Roses: Made of Stone is a rock-doc love letter to the band so bursting with admiration it feels like a fanclub-commissioned response to the challenge.

But it still can’t really tell us why we should care.

Following Ian Brown, John Squire, Reni and Mani from their raucous 2011 press conference that announced their reformation, through to their triumphant homecoming shows in Heaton Park, Manchester, Made of Stone saves diving too deep into the history. Old scraps of audio from interviews float over footage of the band tearing around on homemade mopeds, lolloping about on Top of the Pops, or sending the crowd into raptures at their legendary 1990 gig on Spike Island, flaunting the brusque northern swagger that has become the This Is England director’s stock-in-trade.

But, as Brown himself once put it, ‘It ain’t where you’re from, it’s where you’re at’, and Meadows saves on the anthologising for a focus on the here and now, as the band blow out the cobwebs and get match-ready.

I was watching their Isle of Wight Festival performance on the TV last night ... was quite enjoyable.

Christ, Johnny. 'Quite enjoyable'? What, like Morecambe and Wise?

These lads could be people we know. They are people we know. Just reminds me of my youth. Powerful times, you just don't know it at the time it's happening.

I say 'youth' . Actually i was a little bit older. Still young enough to rule the world though.

That's always been a big part of it for me. I admit to being ferociously protective of northern music/art to the point where I can get quite shouty and unpleasant if it's disrespected by jealous southern types. All London ever seemed to do was copy the north.

I completely missed out on this band. I've absolutely no recollection of them at all, it's a total mystery to me.

I drove past the warehouse project in Trafford a couple of weeks ago when they had the world premier of this film, hundreds of people queuing round the block, red carpets, media scrums, famous people, the lot. All in the middle of the day.

In Trafford.

It was surreal.

Sorry, no where near as enjoyable as Morecambe and Wise ... they are legends.

Anyway, it was a 15 minute rendition of Fools Gold ... Some really good guitar work by (I pressume) John Squire.

The best way to approach the Roses is by disregarding the legend and the historiography of the band and just checking out the music, GB.

Tony Wilson hated them for a long time - that's not too strong a word, he hated them - until he heard 'Waterfall' without knowing that it was them. Afterwards, he realised how important they were and said many, many times that he'd got it wrong. Fair play to Tony Wilson though - they had the weirdest manager in the world who was totally and utterly clueless - and on the evidence presented I think that Tony Wilson called it right originally.

I shall buy you a tartan blanket for Christmas, Johnny. Then I'll push your bath-chair around your forum and let you have a good look at your creation:

================================================== =======

Johnny: Where are we? Where are you taking me? We were just about to have afternoon tea. Leave me alone. Take me back now. It's Saturday. We always get Hob-Nobs on a Saturday. You've no right, dragging me out like this.

Me: Shhhh. This is the Food and Drink Forum, Johnny. This is where the pie thread is. Remember the pie thread?

Johnny: (Doubtfully) I think so. Who's that over there?

Me: That's Goodshaw Boy, Johnny. You must remember Goodshaw Boy?

Johnny: Was that the swearing one?

Me: (Chuckling) Yes! You do remember. Very good, Johnny. Wave to Goodshaw Boy. Go on! Wave!

Johnny: (Waves weakly at Goodshaw Boy) It's all such a long time ago. I remember when it was all just zeros and ones around here.

Me: Yes, well. I think that's enough excitement for today. Let's go back. We don't want you to miss your Hob-Nobs now do we?

Johnny: Can I watch my DVD of 'Last of the Summer Wine' when we get back? Please.

Me: We'll see, eh?

(Music and roll credits)
