The hall was where the swings now are. When I was a kid I can remember playing in ruins just below the swings known as 'the fountains.' There used to be a park keeper called Mr Fennel and he locked the gates every night. As a kid I used to think what was the point of that, as there was no perimeter fence anyway!!! Originally the swings and sandpit were down the bottom end just behind the grocer's shop on park road. My mum and dad met there in April 1954 and the hall had gone by then. Woodhead Farm (now Woodhead close) was at the top end of the park until 1974 when it was demolished. That was a great shame as it was a lovely old building. I love Edgeside park and it breaks my heart to see it as it is now.

Re: Edgeside Park and Hall

Thankyou so much for sharing your memories and thoughts on the park like that. If you are interested in getting involved in the Park regeneration committee there is a meeting on August 3rd at St Annes Church starting at 3pm. It is the Edgeside residents and district association AGM followed by a park sub group meeting. We are hoping that by researching the heritage of the park and surrounding community we can put a successful bid in for funds to really improve it

- Memories are a link; not to the past, but to the future....

Anyones shared memories of the park and surrounding community, or thoughts on what the park needs to make it reflect the best for now and the future will be appreciated.

Re: Edgeside Park and Hall

The tennis courts were amazing. Two guys, one called Jack I think, played every Saturday afternnon for years on end in the 60s and 70s. They used to fall out with each other and it was like Mcenroe v Connors. You paid at the pavilion and a lovely old man gave you a ball and two rackets. The black and white pavilion was stunning. We used to play tig round it for hours and go on the bowling green to upset the old men's games by bowling at break neck speed and knocking their jacks off the green!

Re: Edgeside Park and Hall

There is a photograph of the Hall in the book "Around Rossendale" by Susan Halstead on page 81.

Can't post it on here due to copyright but am sure if you get in touch with the Library they might be able to help.

Have you thought about having a history weekend at St Annes with old photo's on display and old newspapers etc. I did this once for a Grane Project I was doing and got lots of other old photo's and memories (Which I voice recorded) as I invited all of the "Old" folk and they enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

As long as you serve tea and cakes they will stay all day and reminisce

I have just shown this photo to a few who grewup in Edgeside in the 40s/50s and still live in the area and some older people who have lived in all their lives (85/86) and non can remember the house being there. so I dont think it was taken in 1955
