New to this so hope this is OK. Currently researching the heritage of Edgeside Park and surrounding area, in the hope that not only I know more about where I live but with the residents association we can secure funding to pay for improvements at Edgeside Park. Any information anyone can share including sharing memories or old photographs, would love any of the Edgeside lane chippy , Park and Hall .

Anyone know how long the Belgian refugees stayed and what became of them?
Thanks all

The Belgian refugees arrived at Rawtenstall station in Oct 1914, and stayed till the end of the war. They were supplied with free milk and coal by the local farmers and colliers.

The house itself was built about 1862 by the Ormerod family who owned Waterbarn Mill they lived there for a few years before selling it to Mr James Barcroft owner of Gaghills and Todd Carr Mills later to be taken over by Sir Henry Tricket, his son Robert Barcroft lived at the hall following his fathers death., After Robert left it was untenanted until 1914. At the rear of the hall were stalls and boxes for 15 horses, with kennels for hounds on the oppoasite side of the valley at Higher Scout.

The hall had 18 stone carved faces in pairs on the sidces of windows and thew main door. They included Queen Elizabeth, Sir Walter Raliegh,Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort,Milton and Shakespeare.
The bowling green was opend about 1926.

Re: Edgeside Park and Hall

Thankyou so much this is really helpful. Any idea why the hall was actually demolished as it sounds really quite grand. I have seen a photo of the refugees in front of it but would love to find a good photograph of the hall itself and if possible the park with it and the fountain in. Thanks again and any other gems of information you can provide on our hunt to uncover the hidden heritage of Edgeside and its park will be much appreciated,

Cheers, Carol

Information I have was although it was not in a bad state of repair structurally the interior was very bad and it was thought cheaper to demolish than repair. Try back issue of Rossendale Free Press JanuRY 1976 they did a feature on the hall.

Re: Edgeside Park and Hall

This is a great start to my research. I will be in Roawtenstall library tomorrow and January 1976 Freepress will be my first port of call. I know the suffragettes were also very active in the valley - nail bomb at Whittaker park and flour bombing plan on a royal procession through the Glen. I am wondering if they had any meetings or other activities in Waterfoot or Edgeside? Thanks for comments and help thus far, I will share any photos I get ( once I work out how) on here

The Royal Procession was in July 1913, the only meeting I know of was in 1910 on Bacup Rd, Rawtenstall as pictured.

Re: Edgeside Park and Hall

Thanks again, Yes this is the picture I had already seen. I know one of the librarians at Rawtenstall was doing research in to the sufragettes in the valley so hopefully she is still there to give any more pointers. What is a cot as you refer to?
