Ramsbottom - Then, Now and Model

Hello,

Some of you will know that I am with a club called Ramsbottom Model Railway Club. We have been modelling the town of Ramsbottom for 30years and have it in the 1950s era. The model stretches from Nuttall Park in Ramsbottom and heads through Ramsbottom Station then onto Stubbins Junction where our layout heads into the storage sidings after leaving here. Anyway whilst finding some photographs and taking some of Ramsbottom I thought I would have a go at a Then and Now and do a model version so here goes....

Ps sorry the pictures of the model are massive but i did try to resize them but it wouldnt let me

This is looking down Bridge Street towards Ramsbottom (left in 2010) and on the right is our model of Ramsbottom in 1950's. Notice between the two pictures that some buildings have been demolished such as the Toll House (small building with damaged roof) The old Police Station (building behind the toll house on the right), The Weigh Building to weigh wagons on at the Paper works.

The picture on the Left was taken whilst working on the Pway Gang on the East Lancashire Railway and shows Nuttall Tunnel, the first of Two in this section during 2010. The picture on the left is of the same Tunnel but in Model of the 1950's. Not much has changed except for all the trees and shrubs about. The signal on the left picture is actually in the wrong place and is on the right hand side and still with us.

The picture on the Left is of Irwell Bridge Mill and was taken during 2010 and shows a failed atempt to convert this building into apartments so now its left empty and will proberbly end up demolished. But the right hand picture shows this building during its glory years of the 1950's.

The picture on the left is Peel Bridge when it was only a single bridge over the River Irwell and also shows a row of shops this being the start of Peel Brow. This picture is dated 15ft October 1969. The picture on the right is of the same location but in model in the 1950's showing roughly the same location.

The picture on the left is a view from Kays Soapworks in October 1969 and is looking towards Kenyon Street. The picture on the left is in model and looking up the same street. I have tried to copy the image on the left with that in model.

The picture on the left shows the shops on the start of Peel Brow just is also where Kenyon Street meets up with Peel brow, also in the back ground is the single span Peel Bridge that would take you into Ramsbottom. The picture on the right is a copy of that imagine on the left but is in model.

The picture on the left is off Barclays Bank and the Evangelical Church taken during the 1980s when it looks like Bridge Street was having some road repairs carried out. The picture on the right shows the same buildings but as they were in the 1950's on our layout. You may notice that Barlcays Bank has 3 stories well this is because the 3rd level was removed in the 1970's.

The picture on the left shows what is today the Royal Bank of Scotland on Bridge Street taken back in 1980. The picture on the right shows what the bank was originally called William Deacon's Bank LTD and is modelled in the 1950's.

The picture on the left is taken from Kenyon Street looking down Harrison Street towards where the old Irwell Saw Mill was located, This has now had units built on it.This picture was taken July 2010. The picture on the Left shows the same located but is modelled in the 1950s and you can see part of Irwell Saw Mill in the back ground.

The picture on the left shows Stead Street from Kenyon Street looking on towards the remains of Irwell Bridge Mill on the right. This building was sold some time ago to be converted but has only had its roof removed and is in a dangerous way. This image was taken July 2010. The picture on the right is in model from the 1950s and shows the same location.

The picture on the left shows Ramsbottom Station taken from the pedestrian footbridge and shows 50829 with long bunker built 1898 leaving Ramsbottom for Bacup sept 1953. The picture on the right shows Ramsbottom Station in model. I just need to have the same steam engine in place.

Re: Ramsbottom - Then, Now and Model

Well it was started back in 1978 ....I wasnt even born until 1984 and im only 25 now so i cant really take any of the credit but the guys who are still with us have done a fantastic job over the years..

Rawtenstall??? jesus we would need a bigger club house haha.

Yes the place can be open to the public...we intend to hold an open day hopefully sometime when there is a steam event on at the elr so we can promote both.

if you visit out website www.rmrc.webs.com you can see more pictures etc. We did have a model railway magazine come and take pictures but so far not heard anything else

if you would like to visit then drop me an email and can tell you the location... Eagle1711@hotmail.com I am away for a week from tomorrow to please give me time to respond.....to all the fan mail lmao :P

Re: Ramsbottom - Then, Now and Model

Absolutely fantastic model, brings back many memories of the Rammy of my youth.

When I lived in Rammy in the sixties and seventies, I remember the Model railway club being set up, based I think in an old church hall at the bottom of Peel Brow.
Our postie was a founder member and I went down a few times.

Well done, looks superb..
