Here is a now and then. The top postcard probably is vintage or thereabouts? and the bottom photo is what I took from the same area in 2003.

Re: Whitaker Park - Rawtenstall.

The house was owned by the hardman family from 1840 and was bought at the turn of the century by Richard Whitaker who gave the money for the house to be turned into a museum and the park for the people of rawtenstall.
Richard Whitaker never lived at the house it was only the hardman family who lived there.
Fascinating history of the place in the reception room at the museum and lots of old photo's

Re: Whitaker Park - Rawtenstall.

Local Rawtenstall boy born in 1829 in poverty. One of 13 children who rose up through the ranks after starting work in the cotton mills aged 6 years old.

Worked his way up to managerial positions in various cotton firms and ended his working life as director of an accrington company manufacturing mill machinery.

He built up quite a fortune and left a lot of his money to local charities etc.

That's just of the top of my head - if you want more info let me know and I will sort some out

Forgot to say if you have not been to the museum it is well worth a visit. It has a lot of local history in there and also plenty of victorian social history as well.

I have worked there for the past 6 years (Only do every other weekend now) and every time I am in I find out something new

Opening times are

Tues Wed Thurs 1-4
Sat Sun 1-4

and admission is totally free!!!

I think I'm right in saying the Hardmans had the house so they could look down on their mill at New Hall Hey
