With reference to Jans question in another thread about the Bacup Echo. The Bacup Echo's first edition went out on April 8th 1972, it was produced by Jim Lord a former reporter for the Bacup Times. One of the photographers was as Jan said Mr Hargreaves. It is his bound collections of Bacup Echos that I have here and have been refering to. They were donated to the Nat by his son a couple of weeks ago.

They are a great source when doing family, or local history research as are the Bacup Times, which originals were donated to the Nat many years ago by the library when they went to microfiche and some from the private collection of John Willie Johnson.

Im not sure what was in the collections from the Free Press office as I have been away from the Nat for the past few weeks, but I am sure they will be a welcome addition to anyone researching.

The last edition of the Bacup Echo went out on April 30th 1977.

Re: Bacup Echo and Others

I have never been to Bacup Nats and was looking forward to going with the Lancashire Family History Society in August this year. Unfortunately they have had to re-arrange the visit to september and I will be back at work then and unable to go.
Do you ever have open days at the nats and are there any planned for the future?

Hi Chloe, the only official open day we have is on Easter Saturday. But we do open by arrangement. I can usually accomodate requests to look at the old newspapers books, documents and photographs, but dont have access to the museum upstairs which is the two Kens domains but they are usually more than happy to make arrangements for veiwing.

Wasn't there a reporter on the Free Press called Hargreaves who was, I think, also a lay preacher?

Re: Bacup Echo and Others

Im not sure Wadey but I would imagine it is the same one. With regards to a Nat visit, I would imagine with people working a night visit would be needed. You would be more than welcome. We are open every Thursday night, and do group visits then. Sort out a date between yourselves etc and let me know and Ill sort it out
