THIEVES have caused outrage after stealing part of a sculpture created by children from a special school.
The 7ft statue called ‘The Workers’, was created by pupils at Tor View Special Needs School after they beat 80 competitors to design art for the roundabout near Tesco in Haslingden.
Now one of the figures has been stolen and police believe it may have been taken for its scrap value.
It is the third time part of the sculpture has been stolen since its creation in 2006. Following earlier incidents the sculpture was welded down. Full Story

Re: Outrage at Haslingden sculpture vultures

I bet its the Gypos. I get around Hassy a lot during the day & there are loads of them up & down grabbing all they can in dodgy pickups with plywood sideboards. We have them coming to my place of work trying to grab any steel they can.

Re: Outrage at Haslingden sculpture vultures

Someone I know saw 'gypos' lurking in her garden behind her garage. She asked them what they were doing and they said they were looking for scrap. They hadn't asked permission so in effect they would be stealing. She threatened to let her dogs out and they scarpered.
It doesn't matter what they take, it is all stealing and more dangerous when they steal manhole covers. We are over run with them at the moment and some of them are well known local people so surely the police could 'police' things. I suppose it is down to man power and legislation.
Historically they have not been stopped/are avoided if possible because they are 'of no fixed abode', disappear conveniently, have no valid ID etc...so it clogs up the police records as 'unsolved crime'.
TBH to call them gypsies or travellers does not accurately describe them for the thieving, frauding, drug dealing scum that they are. There are (somewhere on this planet) genuine traditional gypsies who like anyone else are appalled at their younger generations behaviour.
I also think that the scrap dealers have a convenient cop out when they trade in stolen scrap...they know who they deal with and to say that it is melted down and is untreaceable is no excuse, they could cooperate more but I suppose they do have to make a living.
Rant over

Re: Outrage at Haslingden sculpture vultures

I didn't catch all the report on Radio Lancs but I am sure someone has anonymously returned the stolen figure along with a cheque for £50 and an apology. Peter Sweetmore from Musbury Fabrics was being interviewed. So, although I apologise for my assumption about one particular sector of society, I still hold by my description of them. I wonder if it was a practical joke/ransom thing or did someone actually have a conscience?
