Re: Haslingden Library to Close for Six Weeks

LANCASHIRE County Council has received a grant of over £1.39 million from the Big Lottery Fund to extend and refurbish three of its local libraries as part of its YourSpace community project.

Building on the strong community link that libraries already have across the county, the investment from BIG's Community Libraries funding will help create flexible spaces to attract more groups and individuals who may not currently use libraries.

The County Council received the grant, totalling £1,394,111, after successfully submitting a written bid earlier this year.

The three local libraries that have been earmarked for a makeover are: Colne (£325,000), Haslingden (£325,000) and Lancaster (£650,000).

Almost half of the expenditure – over £613,000 – will be spent on refurbishment, including structural improvements, new carpets, flooring, decoration, shelving and furniture, and new electrical wiring to improve lighting and ventilation in all buildings. £80,000 will be used for ICT improvements including installation of advanced audio and visual equipment. Lancaster library will benefit from a new lift.

The new-look libraries will create new community spaces and facilities encouraging personal development, learning and community cohesion – a place for people of all ages and interests to use, not just to read books.

The public spaces in the buildings will be enlarged and improved environmentally. Spaces will be more flexible with large meeting rooms capable of being split into smaller areas to be used for a variety of community activities.
These flexible spaces will be used for learning, arts, performance, families, heritage, well-being and a sanctuary for all. The new libraries will deliver a range of learning activities including ICT courses, intergenerational learning, writing courses, skills for life, story telling activities, music production and musical instrument lessons.

This is the project that Haslingden Library is involved with and the money is being used to create more community activity in the Haslingden Area. In my own opinion (and I am not a fan of the Lancashire Library Service at the moment) this work had to be done to meet the needs of the people in the area and as Matty said we are better off moving with the times than having the library close down due to lack of people using it. I really hope it works but only time will tell
