The map says reservoir too rather than pond which suggests drinking water supply do you think, so rather than a well
, is it effectively a pipe without a tap?

The map is dated 1893 and on Water Street, behind what is now Crawshawbooth Library, was Bridge Mill so the reservoir would have supplied that. Pilling Well was basically a public water tank that overflowed back into Folly Brook.
