I seem to remember that the peaty banks had a tendency to collapse. I wonder if the cost of upkeep against it's size became it's downfall.

Cheers.

Re: Greenfold reservoir

perhapce, and wasn't there a problem with the integrity of is lts water tightnes so to speak. There was obviously a need for a new res as they built the underground one off gib hill lane in the early 80s. it cant be nowheer near the capacity of greenfold though

Re: Greenfold reservoir

I used to trout fish in Greenfold in the 60's (rip), I would walk over from W.W.B. I would go up the lane from just above the Lumb corner past Lumb United's ground and turn above Peer's Clough Hall and then left until the ground started to drop and there was Greenfold.
No wonder I was hungry by the time that I got back home to W.W.B., "Happy Days".

Re: Greenfold reservoir

My dad's earliest memory is of taking butties up to his dad who was working on the big wall around it in 1940, just before he went in the army. There used to be a tall narrow house dated 1941 which I believe is now converted into a private residence. My grandparents lived at Higher Hugh edge while granddad was employed by the water board. It is the ruin you see with the lonely tree between lumb and the res. They abandoned the farms around the time of the war and used them for artillery practice. I loved the res. It was sad when it went; a bit of personal family history.

I used to walk home back to goodshaw from the commer, had a few late night wobbly walks over the tops. used to come up over chamber height.

my girlfriend lived in wwb and we used to meet up on the tops, she came over the peers clough way.

used to play in some of those old farms. we cleared the cellar out at Granny house in preparation for the nuclear holocaust

This must be the place, there isn't much left of it now the cellar has fallen in, these were taken well over a year ago.

I'm sure this is Granny House with the tree

Thanks for these photos. I am sure my grandad lived around there, in Granny house after his Dad died in 1912.

Re: Greenfold reservoir

My god Kid 70s, you must love mining or you must be certifiably mad.

The photo of you?? Poaching in that mine...... Jeeesus, that scares me to death just lookin at it. How far in/underground are you at that point?

I wouldn't have gone in a place like that for all the pies in Hollands.....

Fantastic photos, I have nothin but admiration for you.
