The Rossendale Free Press dated 21/06/1980 had an article on the removal of Lumb Valley Anglers fish stock prior to draining the reservoir for maintenance and inspection.

A Rossendale Free Press article dated 16/02/1985 stated that North West Water had abandoned plans to re-commission the reservoir, which had been drained several years earlier, after a structural survey estimated the work would cost 1.15m. Due to the small capacity of the reservoir and the low quality of the water it had been decided to remove the embankment at a cost of approximately 400,000 and the removal work would start in the summer (1985).
I have not been able to find confirmation that the work was done at this date but I think its fair to assume so.

Facts and figures

The reservoir was built in the early 1860s and had a capacity of 15,000,000 cu ft of water(approx 93,000,000 gallons), had a catchment area of 16.5 acres and with average rainfall would be refilled 6 times per year. The estimated cost was 2,777.

Note: By comparison Clowbridge Reservoir holds 320,000,000 gallons. and has a catchment area of 90 acres.

Re: greenfold reservoir

I can remember it as a kids and walking down the overflow steps, there isn't much left of it now apart from a few boundary banking.

Re: greenfold reservoir

I used to do a lot of research into the fish in Greenfold Res, the water may have been low quality, but the Trout were of very high quality and graced many a breakfast table of Crawshawbooth in the 1960s. Thanks for the info, I didn't know it had been drained.

Re: Greenfold reservoir

I wonder if the poor water quality was due to alot of it coming out of Swineshaw colliery. The main drift drained straight into the res. Infact nearly all the gathering ground would be affected by the colliery workings which were higher up than the water level in the res.

used to love going up there on a summer night and watching them fishing. we used to roll down the embankment as kids. jump across the overflow steps.

Remember one winter, 78/79 or so and it was quite frozen over. it was fun lobbing gret shoddies accross the ice.

we went up the old drift a few times, but went right up after the res had been drained. we came accross a fall about 100 yds inbye and it was all backed up red carr water behind it. Dug through it and cleared the back log, father found carr deposits down in crawshawplonk from it.

I still reckon the valley looked better with the res rather than without it. When they built the new res in the 80s above Gib Hill lane, I wondered why they never holed into the old workings there, as they are not very far down at that point.

Dose anybody remember the little lodge behind the central football pitch? we were always told as kids that a young un drowned in it

Re: Greenfold reservoir

Aye, I remember it, I remember my mum tellin me an my brother this same tale, dunno if it was true or whether it was told just to scare us an keep us away from water, It wouldn't have made any difference though as I think it had been drained before we were born.

She's still bloody crackers ......
