Re: Air raid shelters

we played in the one behind the bingo hall in Bacup as a kid, also, there was a small one near the lodges at Wier, on Irwell Springs ground. It has gone now i checked, all that area has been redeveloped and some new Eco Houses going up.

Re: Air raid shelters

There used to be some in Crawshawbooth, in the rough field where Rossendale Vulcanising is now. Don't know if they are still there though.

Re: Air raid shelters

The caves on Burnley road east at the bottom of piercy was also used as an air raid shelter, when a warning went out all the children from Piercy school were walked down the hill and were kept in the caves while the all clear went out, they were at the back of the old tripe works, now there are some nice detatched houses there.

Re: Air raid shelters

There were two on Grane Road. I have been in both.
The first was underneath the tip between the Methodist Chapel (which has now been demolished) and Ormerod's confectioner's. The entrance was at the base of the tip and as children we found our way in and it became our 'den'. It was directly opposite to Prospect Hill and the ginnel which led to Charles Lane. The entrance faced Ormerod's gable end and the passage we sat in ran parallel to Prospect Hill and towards the Sunday School part of the chapel.

The other was on the other tip on Grane Road between Smith's Decorator's ( a stone-built semi ) and the cottages next to my uncle's Joinery. It was approached by a wide gate in the stone wall. This area is opposite what used to be one of Billy Bell's fields and which has now become Grane Park. The entrance was from the top of the tip and there were metal rungs to descend into the shelter. Inside there were two benches and it was cold and damp in there. When the air-raid warden knocked on the door following the alert those neighbours with no cellar gathered there. My family only used it once as far as I remember because my parents fitted out the cellar with spare beds.
