Air raid shelters

On my way home from work my son asked me if I knew were there was any air raid shelters in the valley, I told hime that when I was a young lad we used to play in the ones up Edgeside and in Tricketts memorial gardens and I told him that the caves at Scoutbottom were also used as shelters.

He then asked about others in the valley and I had to admit I did not know, but I would ask,

so can any of you tell us of others and any one got any photos.

Re: Air raid shelters

We used to play in one on Waterside Road at the bottom of Charles Lane. Don't know if it's still there but will ask my mum about it as I also thought there was one in Parkers Wood at the bottom of Charles Lane on the right just before the industrial units.

Re: Air raid shelters

I've been told that the celler of our house was used as a shelter by the residents on the row, not sure how true that is though.

Re: Air raid shelters

I used to mess about in the ones in Trickets Gardens in Waterfoot, and the one at the side of the old Alder Grange School.

I can't think of any left standing today.

I'd have thought they'd be too far away for most folk.

Didn't you have to be in your shelter within a couple of minutes of the siren starting?

Sorry both in Haslingden. I am up there this weekend so will have a quick look to see what's left there. I have a book called "East Lancashire at War" and that has one or two photo's in of the Anderson Shelters but the ones I remember were the ones which looked like outside toilets but once inside had the steps down and stone seats along either side.
