I agree with Hillbilly these should be opened up & cleaned up so you can wander through them and look at the engineering that went into making them.

If you did go through on a motor bike you would get stuck at the end, its only really fine for walkers due to that there is no easy access point from the glen road side, even walkers have to climb down a wall to get access to the main road.

It would make a fantastic museum celebrating the history of the local quarry and railways.

Re: Went for a walk through the Glen tunnel

We saved our school dinner money to buy ciggies, then went rooting in the skip at what was Fitch and Son, this was a food wholesale warehouse at one time on the Ind Est next to the tunnels. They threw away loads of broken stuff. Might of had 10 Silk Cut for dinner and a full packet of broken Garibaldi's, eaten in the tunnels. Early 80's that

Re: Went for a walk through the Glen tunnel

Why did they only block one tunnel off? id love to just get a sneak preview inside the blocked tunnel. probably still some old railway lines in there.

Re: Went for a walk through the Glen tunnel

no lines in there ,they blocked it off to stop stolen cars being burnt out in there.

Re: Went for a walk through the Glen tunnel

As a kid from Waterbarn we used to play on the line just after the line closed, it was always said there was a ghost in the big tunnel called the Red Shadow it was a regular occurance for the new kid who was scared to go through the big tunnel to be taken through with a group while one of the other went through the small tunnel then into the big tunnel through the access shaft, this kid would then hide in the dark and make noises as the group approached the group would then crouch down leaving the new kid on his own in the pitch black terrified, while the lines were down someone found a bogie that we used to push up and down the line with loads of kids on , Oh happy days before health and safety how did we manage to get through our childhood ?
