Re: Rossendale Friends Reunited

Hi there

My name is Rachel Holland, born 1957 in Rawtenstall, lived in Waterfoot until 1965 when we moved to Wales. Went to Waterfoot Primary School, Thornfield Avenue and my mother was a teacher there - Sheila Holland. I have a brother Nicholas Holland, born 1951. We lived at Wood Lea Bank in Waterfoot and Dad had Bowness's - see my other threads/posts!

At the time I had a good school friend called Kathryn Fitzgerald who had dark curly hair and I remember her Dad was a milkman. We lived next door to Peter, John and Nicholas Ingham (the sons of Inghams Boxes) and from the street I remember Vivienne and Fiona Burnside, Carolyn Johnson and Richard Lloyd and his sister, whose name escapes me (senior moment!).

If anyone does remember me, my friends or or my family, please let me know.

thanks!

Hi Rachel,

Sorry I don't know any of the people you have mentioned from the street, but I now live at Woodlea Bank! What number did you live at? I'm at number 4. It would be great to see some photos of the street when you lived there if you have any

Cheers

Corrie

Hi Corrie

I lived at number 2 - which could be next door to yours depending how the number go - ours was the end house next to the path we called "private". Across from the path is Woodlea House - is this a nursing home now? This was owned by the Inghams who had Inghams Boxes at the time. I do have a picture I am sure, which I will have to extract from the loft and scan and attach for you. At the time the road was cobbled and we used to play tops and whips on the cobbles (I can't believe I am this old) and also pick out the melted tar in hot weather. We had a shed on the first lower level of the garden and bred mice there - to the horror of my mother. We also had access to the river from the bottom of the garden and spent lots of time wading in wellies though the water, pulling out old rubbish! When we lived in the house we had the original victorian green velvet curtains in the lounge as I remember and, having no fridge, kept the milk and butter in the cellar. The bath (and probably the loo and sink) was the original roll top and we didn't use the top floor but, before we sold the house to a family called Ainscow in 1965 my parents did put floor boards down on the top floor. Please allow a bit of time for the picture(s) which, of course are in black and white. Regards Rachel

Re: Rossendale Friends Reunited

Thanks for the reply Rachel,

Yes its next door to ours, unfortunately your bathroom has been changed a number of times (infact I think the current owners are changing it at the moment!)

Did you have the flat roof extension at the back of the house, or did yours look like the rest of the street with the outside toilet and coalsheds?

The gardens have gone to rack and ruin, although the trees are still there, and you can just about make out the terracing if you look hard enough through the weeds

My son has the top bedroom in our house - its massive! I would've loved to have had a room that size when I was a child..

The pathway is still classed as private, we could do with re-doing the path infront of the houses though, as its starting to slip down towards the flower bed after years of having tarmac put on top of old tarmac... if I had the time, money and inclination I would do the garden etc, as I think it could look really good.

Wood Leigh House is indeed a nursing home for children, and looks like it would be a great house to live in.

I can't wait to see your photos, I know my neighbour would also be interested as we both share an interest in how properties change over the years!

Thanks for the info.

Regards
Corrie

Talking Re: Rossendale Friends Reunited

Hi

We had no outside loo (possibly removed??)but did have a coal shed with a delivery door from the pavement on the street and the coal could be acessed from the scullery, which had a glass roof reinforced with wire, but the scullery had no windows. We used this as the kitchen. I guess this part may now have a flat roof. The reason we didn't use the top floor is that there was a story that someone (a child I think) fell from the top window. However I am not sure if this is true as there were no floorboards up there anyway. The stairway to the top floor had a door to it also so it wasn't seen from the landing unless the door was opened. As I remember there was a step down from the top of the stairs to the bathroom, which was pretty large. The smallest bedroom on the front I called "the woo room" as the wind used to "wooo" round the window! Even tho' Mum taught at school, we also took in lodgers which were teachers from the Secondary School. This meant I often slept in my parents' bedroom on the back of the house whilst the lodgers used the front 2 bedrooms. My brother would have been away at boarding school. We didn't use the front lounge much - for "best" and in the summer when the sun warmed the room up. We mainly used the middle room for every day use. The back door led into another living room which had a coal boiler in it and lovely cupboards to the left. The front and back steps were always donkeystoned in white, not buff!! The gardens were reasonably kept with lovely old roses on the first lower tier. Woodleigh house was huge and beautiful. I played there often and know that Nicholas Ingham has a cine film of us playing in around 1964. The family had a petrol go cart and had a corner of he house reduced(chiselled away) to ensure the go cart could go right round the house.

Regards Rachel

Re: Rossendale Friends Reunited

Hi there Corrie

I have attached three photos from 1960/61 showing the front of Wood Lea Bank. They show myself, Nicholas my brother and Mum and Dad (Sheila and Roy Holland) on the front door step of Number 2. You can see the donkey stone on the door step too. One has a decent view down Wood Lea Bank also. Sorry about the Condition of the photos though - I will also find one more which is a view from the back asap. Hope you find them useful/of interest.
Regards

Rachel Holland
