Re rumoured 20 miles of tunnels.
After many years of investigation I now think this story is an old wives tale.
For the following reasons.

The height difference on the respective hillsides of Scout and Chapel Hill mines
Every stone mines workings that I have been in around the Rossendale Valley has been level
with no history of steam pumping equipment.

Chapel Hill mine is very wet and probably has always been so.If the Scout and |Chapel Hill were linked I would have expected Scout to be also wet. Being very much down hill.

Lancashire Flag Stone. The type mined in all 3 quarries does I believe run in outcrops of up to 200yds. Not seams! Coincedently the recently surveyed extent of both Pinner and Scouts workings.

A recent mineral map “undated” that I was looking at. showed an man excess tunnel at Bonfire Hill rd side of the quarry, it also showed all the narrow gauge tramways accessing the coal mines in the Bonfire Hill area. It more importantly showed the extent Coal Extraction of the Sandrock coal seam being worked in the direction of Chapel Hill quarry.

Maybe the 20 miles of tunnels rumour refers to the Sandrock Coal seam
which I believe had 5 mines acessing but this probably includes Rooley Moor

If one assumes that the Bonfire Hill quarries were being worked at the same time and were extensive I would have expected the extent to be shown on the same map.
But it just show the outline of the quarry.

Re: Chapel Hill Quarry?

Wonder if you could enlighten me. I lived at the top of Adelaide Street Crawshaw booth when I was about 8. A few of us walked up to a quarry and we called it "Little Delph," Was this the Bonfire Hill one? Also we then explored a bigger quarry and called it "Big Delp." the rd we took to this was up the hill past the Friends Meeting House. So could you tell me which was which etc?
