Re: Chapel Hill Quarry?

Well I for one would be up for a trip down any of these mines if any ROL'ers go for it. Preferably a good long trip in. I can bring some string so we can find our way back.

Re: Chapel Hill Quarry?

I've got some pics of the tunnel at the top end of Bolton Woods. I shall upload them soon. They were taken last year and it looked to me as if something odd was going on... When I last went past it over winter now much had changed since my previous visit. Didn't realise it had now been filled in? For many years it just had a metal grid over the top.

Re: Chapel Hill Quarry?

I dont know where Chapel Hill Quarry is but I was brought up in Newchurch and have now retired to France. I have lost touch with all old friends from Rossendale completely and am now at an age where I am beginning to reminisce !
I played as a young child on Seat Naze and was warned by my parents never to go into the large caves at Scoutbottom, (we lived at the top of Greendale Avenue and the caves were just over a stone wall and a scramble down sthe steep hill from us)
But I confess to breaking through a grid covered by leaves in Boltons Woods above Heightside house as a young child with three friends and exploring the tunnel with candles and torches and gazing on a vast underground lake which I have often thought about over the intervening 50+ years !

This is the one I have pictures of inside, but I have never ventured inside as of yet, as there was a massive stone slab blocking in the entrance. I would like to go in though with a lantern and my camera, and have a nosey!
