Sophie Lancaster, 20, who was attacked and received horrific injuries, whilst walking through Stubbylee Park in Bacup, died this morning.

Sophie and her boyfriend Rob Maltby, 21, were attacked at 01:20am on August 11th, as they walked through Stubbylee Park.

Both were left unconscious and were in comas, due to the sheer brutalness of the attacks.

Rob had bleeding on the brain, but has now recovered and paid an emotional visit to Sophie earlier this week.

Det Insp Dean Holden, who is leading a team of 14 officers investigating the incident, said: "We are still appealing for witnesses to the alleged assaults to come forward. We believe there were up to 15 people in the vicinity at the time and we would very much like to speak to every single one of those witnesses."

Five teenagers have been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.

A 15 year old and 17 year old were remanded in custody and two 15 year olds and a 17 year-old were released on bail.

They are all due to appear before Burnley Youth Court on September 27th.

Anybody with any information, should call Rawtenstall CID on 01706 237 443 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Rossendale Online would like to express our deepest sympathies and are thoughts are with family and friends. A tragic and extremely sad loss.

Re: Bacup park attack woman dies following attack

I wrote a letter to the Free Press a couple of weeks back, its just been published today, I think it is way past the point of no return for this Country, some one has to grasp the nettles in Government, someone has to stand up for the victims, if the Govt cant or wont do it because they are afraid of losing out at the polls, the only alternative will have to be a local militia employed by the people for the people, I thought thats what the Police were for , to protect the people, but it seems they are just Govt puppets, in place to serve the elite.

ANGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree but the sad truth will be they will get about 6 years and then set free after 4 probs for good behaviour

My condolences go out to the families, I have kids of my own & can only imagine what pain they are going through now.

They were under 18, so will go under the Youth Justice System.

Maximum sentence is 2 years if they are detained, unless they get a Section 90/91. This means they could receive the same sentence as an adult.

I do hope the courts deal with this correctly and show that acts of mindless violence like this, simply can't and won't be tolerated.

While family and friends suffer WE are paying their solicitors and barristers who will be trying to get them off.

This is terrible, I'd only read the Free Press earlier this morning that she was fighting for her life. My heart goes out to her family and boyfriend. Let's hope the culprits are dealt with swiftly.

Bad news indeed. What with the events in Liverpool also this week, it makes me mad. Such a waste of life.

The kids who do this deserve all they get.

Re: Bacup park attack woman dies following attack

This is a very tragic loss of a young life and as a parent of a daughter the same age I can't begin to think how the family will ever get over it. My son went to school with Robert and he is really upset about it.

It's time for zero tolerance of these young thugs, if the parents can't control them they should be locked up and treated like the scum they are and the parents should be in the next cage.

It's time to stop the liberalisation and the anything goes culture and get back to family values and a work ethic in this country. Let's have some politicians who will bring in proper punishments to fit the crime and stop pandering to the dregs of society who beat people up out of boredom.

Re: Bacup park attack woman dies following attack

Echo above replies and especially Kath. Everyone is sick and fed up with the so called 'Human Rights' issues and 'I know my Rights'. What about the victims of the crimes?
IMO children have been an all too ready meal ticket for some people and we are now reaping the rewards. After all it doesn't cost anything to actually become pregnant, but the rewards seem never ending and someone else (agencies, government, social services, schools etc...) can help bring your child up for you. Some people have seen that having a child can actually guarantee them some income/a home/benefits, and they don't actually have to be responsible for that child, especially if they don't give a monkeys in the first place. Government policies have compounded this problem and even encouraged it to an extent and it is high time that the nation got real. The police have limited powers and the courts are too lenient by far. There are no consequences anymore!!!!....so Yee Haa anything goes!
I apologise if I have offended anyone but I am so upset and angry about this tragedy that I just had to vent. If fact my whole family is shocked, upset and angry and our hearts go out to the families involved.
