Police to escort Todmorden Moor Wind Farm turbine truckers

POLICE-escorted trucks will be driven through the Valley in November and December as turbines are transported to Todmorden Moor Wind Farm.

Roads in Rawtenstall, Waterfoot, Stacksteads, Bacup and Shawforth could be closed, residents stopped from parking, and businesses prevented from loading.

The traffic prohibition will be active between 11am and 3pm, Monday to Saturday, starting this Monday, and then ending either when the work is completed, or on Tuesday, December 31 at the latest.

The route will begin at the roundabout in Haslingden Road in Rawtenstall and on to Bacup Road, Newchurch Road, Todmorden Road and Market Street.

Colin Fletcher, owner of JB Carpets in Newchurch Road, Stacksteads, said: “They say they are transporting the turbines at a time which won’t disrupt people, but it will do.

“I never know what time my deliveries are going to come, and if they close the road or stop deliveries, it’s going to affect us.

“I can’t see why they are bringing the lorries through Rossendale if the windfarm is in Todmorden, which isn’t even in Lancashire.”

Oliver Starkey, the county council's highways manager for Rossendale, said: “We have put these traffic orders in place so that the police can escort vehicles carrying unusually large and heavy equipment to the wind farm at Todmorden Moor.

"We are working with the contractor and our partners to do all we can to keep disruption to a minimum.

“The wagons will move the equipment at times when traffic is quietist. “This will help in avoiding the morning and evening rush hour.

“Journeys should only be delayed by a few minutes as the convoy passes through.”

Re: Police to escort Todmorden Moor Wind Farm turbine truckers

The route as shown in the LET is straight up the A681 from Rawtenstall through Waterfoot,Stacksteads and Bacup at to the site, which although called Todmorden Moor is really just through Sharneyford.
I can't see where Shawforth comes in but then enter the Rossendale Free Press with a different set of details saying that some of the equipment is coming Rochdale way and through Whitworth, Park Road (which would involve New Line) and then in to Bacup.
This would be to avoid the tight roundabout in Bacup centre I imagine although why Rochdale way I'm not sure unless it's the transport of the blades which are longer and wider and cannot come through the valley.
The surprising thing is that they say parking restrictions will apply but I live on Todmorden Road and have had no notification of anything.
There are only 5 turbines going up at Sharneyford so it's not movements on the scale of Scout Moor but the turbines are actually 25m taller.

Re: Police to escort Todmorden Moor Wind Farm turbine truckers

Went up to the wind farm this morning and it looks like many of the turbine components are now on site and construction of the first one has begun. However, according to LET there has been an accident where a worker fell from the structure and the HSE are investigating so maybe work is now suspended until checks are made.
One thing is certain though, the parts, especially the blades are absolutely huge and due to their proximity to Todmorden Road, the turbines will certainly be a noticeable feature when travelling over the border.

And they still haven't got the first one up.
On Monday when i walked over there the tower was up but non of the blades were fitted and looking at the forecast I can't imagine that changing much this side of New Year.
Who'd have thought it, high winds at a windfarm site.
I certainly wouldn't like to be paying the hire charges on the huge crane sat there doing nowt.

Re: Police to escort Todmorden Moor Wind Farm turbine truckers

I took some photo's up there yesterday but conditions weren't as clear as on them.
Work on constructing the third one is well underway now as well although this and the other two are a fair distance further over the moor and not as noticeable as the two pictured.
It also looks like ground works are about to begin on the Reaps Moss site on the opposite side of the road so Rossendale's part in saving the planet should soon be complete.

Hmm, perhaps when they start fracking underneath them they will damage the foundations and they will fall over?

We can only hope :

With all these propellers going up I'm pretty sure our little island is going to lift off sometime soon , I suppose that should solve the flooding problems!
