Mixed response to plan for skate park in vacant town centre car park.

Council bosses have raised the proposal for the One Stop Shop site in Rawtenstall following its demolition early next year.

An idea to replace a town centre space left by vacated council offices with a skate park has met with a mixed response.

Council bosses have raised the proposal for the One Stop Shop site in Rawtenstall following its demolition early next year.

In a report presented to the council’s cabinet it was suggested the site could be used by skaters on an ad-hoc basis.

The report said: “Following informal discussions with young people who meet on the Town Square, there has been a proposal via Rawtenstall Town Team that the hard-standing and adjacent lower car park be made available for young people as an informal meeting point and skate area.”

David Gould, president of the Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the plans as “good”.

He said: “It’s nice to see the town square being used with skateboards and bikes on there so to give them a dedicated place for them to go is great.

“It’s clearly only a temporary use. There are all sorts of things being talked about for the town centre. We often hear people saying that there’s nothing to do for young people in the town centre.”

Coun Andy MacNae, the portfolio holder for leisure and regeneration, welcomed the plans.

He said: “I think this is a really good idea and I think there are ways of doing it without too much cost.”

However, Conservative group leader Darryl Smith is unconvinced by the proposal.

He said: “I personally don’t have a problem with skateboard parks but I know that having one in the centre of the town in Rawtenstall is not a good idea. Can you imagine what it will be like for pedestrians having to negotiate their way through from the bus station to Bank Street?”

Free Press readers also largely welcomed the plans via our Facebook site.

Stephen Ball said: “Good idea.

“There aren’t enough outdoor venues and activities for young people to get involved with. Might give kids an incentive to do something and prevent them heading into criminality.”

Lyndsay Hayhurst said: “Definitely a good idea, however would install CCTV in case of problems due to town centre location.”

The One Stop Shop relocated to Futures Park in Bacup in August.

Actually I can - they can damn well walk around it like they would have to do if there was a building there!

Setting up a facility for our young adults is a very good idea, give them somewhere to go and play. play may be a word that applies to young kids, but it also applies to older ones too.

Congregate, hang out, doss around, skate, chat etc.
By taking away all the areas that have been taken away from them and only putting back play parks for under 7s the councils have made it so that our young adults have nowhere, so they go where they can, where they are not supposed to and get upto msichief because they have no legitimate place that they can enjoy themselves.

I support a skate park completeleteleteleyyyyyy!

Have you ever been to Southport and watched the young uns in the skate park near the pier? If we can see that kind of skill in Rawtenstall then I'm all for it.
