Jake Berry has called for the chief executive of Tesco to explain why the borough’s motorists are paying up to 5p a litre more to fill up, compared to neighbouring towns.

Rossendale's MP is demanding an explanation as to why Valley motorists are paying over the odds for petrol.

Jake Berry has called for the chief executive of Tesco to explain why the borough’s motorists are paying up to 5p a litre more to fill up, compared to neighbouring towns.

The Free Press highlighted the disparity in our stop ripping us off campaign last year.

Jake has now written to Philip Clark, Tesco group chief executive, and asked to meet with him to explain how he can justify their prices.

Jake said: “It’s scandalous that Tesco can get away with ripping us off here in Rossendale.

“I will be interested to hear what the Group Chief Executive has to say for himself. I for one will be doing my best to boycott Tesco’s petrol pumps until prices are brought back in line.”

Jake raised the need for fairer fuel for all in Westminster, working with the All Party Parliamentary Group Meeting for fair fuel prices.

In a sample taken on Tuesday, October 29 we found the cheapest petrol in Rossendale was at Shell in Rising Bridge for 129.9p per litre while Tesco in Rawtenstall was charging 133.9. Tesco in Burnley was 4p per litre cheaper at 129.9 while Asda in Burnley was 128.7.

The average price in Burnley was 131.1 compared with 133.3 in Rossendale.

Tesco said their pricing policy was in line with all other petrol retailers in the UK.

A spokesperson added: “Our clear goal for customers is to be competitive on petrol and diesel in local catchment areas for each store, so Tesco does not operate with one national price.”

Re: MP demands Tesco explain petrol prices.

About time, until they sort it out I'll continue to buy fuel elsewhere.

I have whinged about this before , Tesco's will happily price match their groceries yet not their fuel.
Same tanker delivers to Rawtenstall & then to Burnley. Grossly unfair .

Re: MP demands Tesco explain petrol prices.

One of my routes to work is via Todmorden, Hebden Bridge & Halifax.

Lots of 129.9p per litre places that I have been using.

Re: MP demands Tesco explain petrol prices.

I have driven into the valley since 2007, never fill up here unless in error, the worst i remember is seeing 8p difference

Currently Asda near me £126.7 unleaded, then I get 1% off with credit card 321

Re: MP demands Tesco explain petrol prices.

This is the 3rd time in 4 years it's been highlighted, they put it down for a few weeks then it goes back up again. Hopefully something will change this time, I have a work unit in Burnley, family in Accrington and hospital appointments in Manchester so no real incentives for me to fill up in Rossendale.

Re: MP demands Tesco explain petrol prices.

I notice it didn't last long, the 2p price difference is there again. Seems the only way to solve this would be for everyone to boycott the fuel stations until it is permament.

Re: MP demands Tesco explain petrol prices.

.. Perhaps Jake Berry & RFP should continue to campaign for the end of this anomaly.
I hadn't noticed the sneaky price rise , so thanks for that, will go back to filling my car when I am out of the valley.
Makes me mad though..
