Architects to create ‘unique’ Rawtenstall town centre

A partnership of council bosses and housing chiefs has appointed DAY Architectural Ltd to carry out a ‘masterplan’ for Rawtenstall town centre following a design competition and consultation.

Architects have been chosen to lead the redevelopment of the former Valley Centre site and they have promised a ‘unique destination’ in the town centre.

A partnership of council bosses and housing chiefs has appointed DAY Architectural Ltd to carry out a ‘masterplan’ for Rawtenstall town centre following a design competition and consultation.

Coun Andy MacNae, the council’s regeneration lead, said the next step was to get retailers to commit to take up space in the new town centre.

He said: “We wanted a partnership of people who shared our vision for the town.

“We don’t want just another town centre – we wanted something that is uniquely Rawtenstall. Bank Street has great character and we have some great heritage building around there and it’s about building on that in a modern way.”

He added: “It’s almost impossible to set a timescale at this stage but I think two years is a good estimate. We have to do this right rather than doing it quickly.”

Coun MacNae added the designs would include the new bus station as well as open space and retail space.

Natalie Sarabia-Johnston, project lead for DAY Architectural Ltd, said they were delighted to be chosen.

She said: “The proposals will provide a unique lifestyle destination within the heart of Rawtenstall, which will build on the excellent work the RTB Partnership have already done and attract new visitors to the region, including those from the Adrenalin Gateway.”

Council leader and RTB Partnership chairman Coun Alyson Barnes was delighted with the deal, details of which are still being finalised.

She said: “We had a number of exciting and innovative proposals to consider.” Coun Barnes added the next stage of plan development and consultation will take place in 2014.

Camden Blomerley, from Civic Pride, viewed the shortlisted designs before the winners were announced. She said: “There were some good designs. The fact they’ve given some thought as to where it was and had taken on board the surrounding area is good. It needs a design where you can see the hills behind and I think that was something a lot of people were concerned about having got rid of the Valley Centre that we don't want to end up with another concrete box there.”

But Conservative group leader Darryl Smith was less impressed. He said: “We were invited to have a sneak preview at what these companies had put forward as part of the design competition and, to be honest, there was nothing that really stood out to me as very exciting.

“It left me pretty cold.”

Let's hope these architects are more on the ball about the design of Rawtenstall town centre than they have been with updating their website.

OH NO!

Not architects..... whatever it is it will be full of stupid visionary stuff, curves and pleasing to their eye stuff that's totally useless and out of place in our town centre. It wont be practical, it wont be Rawtenstall but it will be damn expensive and over the top.

I just hope that the main focus isn't an outdoor shopping and dining experience.

What happened to ALL the previous plans for the redevelopment of Rawtenstall? I can remember at lease three different 'visions of the future' not including the plans for the temporary town square, it must be costing an absolute fortune.

Let us just hope that nobody thinks to utilise it as an interim car park :

Massive RAwtenstall roadworks in 2014.

I would like to see a Gastro Pub serving traditional food with a twist, a giant indoor portable aquarium with eight lanes and a water slide!, a dance hall, a few well chosen 'pound' shops, a bookies or two, Greggs, a Post Office, a newsagent and a brothel. I know which one will make the most money.

How about a small covered shopping precinct, with a small supermarket, a couple of jewellers, a post office, newspaper shop, cafe, opticians etc and somewhere for the pigeons to relax.

I meant soup kitchen; I am reliably informed that there is a difference.

BUt wait, there is room now for the following:

KFC
Mcdonalds
Nandos
Burger king
yourtakeawaynamehere

and so on.

Why do we need shops you can buy anything other than food from? lol
