My last visit to Rawtenstall was in the summer to visit my sister but we took the opportunity to have a walk around. I certainly wasn't impressed!! The centre really upset me and thought how run down it was. I know the cobbles have been on Bank St for years but do the locals really like them. I took some photos of the centre which I will look back on when they finally get round to doing something about it and ask myself - was it really this bad????
I too have very found memories of the old Astoria

Re: Plans to demolish Valley Centre shopping centre

Same here, i moved to Wales in `88, although i do visit friends and family as often as i can, more recently in June this year.
I suppose this is the way of the world, expansion, progress, call it what you will, sometimes they just get it so terribly wrong.
Rawtenstall used to be such a busy town, maybe it was the introduction of the supermarkets in the mid `70's that sealed the fate of all the local shops that we took for granted. they were familiar, we thought they would always be there.
It's a similar situation here in Bangor, too many supermarkets in the area and too many re-generation projects going on.
The shopping centre in Bangor has been under re-construction for the last two years, isn't finished yet and the fear is that the construction company undertaking the job, could well go bust and then...!

Re: Plans to demolish Valley Centre shopping centre

What is it that the shops dont like about it, the state of the buildings, the state of the area or the state of the customers?

Why has it gone so far downhill?

Could well be the rates charges for the shops, plus rents etc.
Y`see, the councils can't help interfering, whenever they make alterations, wheather it be altering the roads, pedestrianisation of town areas or what have you, then it can take ages for things to settle down enough for people to become familiar with things again.
For example, a town near where i used to live on Anglesey, had at least two thirds of the road that ran through it, pedestrianised.
The result? people couldn't be arsed to park up at the top of town and walk down to do their shopping, it was easier to just carry on to the next town.
They had lost the familiar parking places that they had used for years, plus the shops that they had used most of their lives were slowly dissapearing, because people were dropping off slowly and going elsewhere to shop, usually Tesco's.
It makes me think that the councils are in cahoots with the supermarkets, they pedestrianise on perpose to drive the locals to such like as Tesco's etc.
Just a theory of course...?
Then look at the monstrosity at Tup bridge!!...i rest my case.

Re: Plans to demolish Valley Centre shopping centre

A lot of the commuters don't really care as they will never shop in the valley they just use the valley as a home base to commute from to areas like Manchester, Liverpool etc.

Re: Plans to demolish Valley Centre shopping centre

We could always advertise it as a terrorist training camp, specialising in explosions? lol
