Plans are being drawn for the shopping centre in Rawtenstall to be knocked down and replaced with new shops, flats and a multi-storey car park.

The proposal would mean that the Valley Centre would be demolished and a new retail area built.

The new scheme will create 70,000 sq ft of shops, some leisure facilities, a car park for 300 cars and 75 homes.

The work fits in with the preferred option from the Rawtenstall Master Plan to redesign the town centre.

The proposal follows an agreement was reached between the owners of the centre, CNC Group, and Rossendale Council, as some council land is involved in the work.

Work will not begin until formal planning permission is granted.

Are they demolishing all the stores on Bank Street?,this seems to be a hugh
operation.I still remember the Astoria dance hall, the chippy on the opposite
side,Woolworths near the top of the street, and Fitzpatricks the health store
famous for thier sarsaparilla and black beer, are they still around or have they
already gone? Thank you . J.D.S.

Redfoxx, did you even look at the date of the original post?

They are still there, the centre is virtually empty and the developers that were about to start work on it have gone bust.

Most likely It'll still be the same in another 2 years.

woolies and the Bank st shops are still there.

the only shops still open in the actual complex are the YMCA charity shop( next to what used to be the Kettles on cafe), the post office and Ethel austins( think it used to be a co-op there) on the passage down to the police station.

how long is it since you were in Rawtenstall, astoria has been shut for years.

Fitzpatricks and the chippy are still there too, don't think these are in the demolition plans.

Re: Plans to demolish Valley Centre shopping centre

Have the developers gone bust that own the Valley Centre, I have'nt seen anything about them..
Last I heard, Free Press couple of weeks since, the council were going to have a meeting with the company, as they wanted to scale back the residential aspect of their plans.

Re: Plans to demolish Valley Centre shopping centre

Thanks to you all for your replies, the picture is quite clear now,I passed through Rawtenstall and Waterfoot in 1994,it was a nasty day(weather-
-wise)so I did not stay around to long ,but it looked the same to me as it
did in 1957 the year I left for Canada. Do I miss the valley ?, yes I do!!
So the Astoria as been closed for years, where do the young-uns go to
dance now?,Ramy Con,Liberal Club?,the Astoria was THE PLACE in the 50s.
Thanks again , J.D.S.
