A Haslingden community centre is to close at the end of next month unless local people come forward with ideas and tenants to move into the building.

Community Action Rossendale, the charity behind the The Mary Hindle Centre on Bury Road, said last week it had insufficient funds to continue operating after September – so the most likely option is that the facility will simply shut its doors.

One idea is to reopen the centre as a ‘media hub’ for local projects and companies involved in areas like video and audio production, web and graphic design, photography or PR.

Now a meeting’s been set up for this Thursday (13 August) for anyone in the creative industries sector to talk about whether the idea can be made a reality.

Rossendale Radio, which has been awarded a 5-year community radio licence and is due to go on air in the autumn, is currently finalising studio plans and keeping a close eye on developments at The Mary Hindle Centre.

Tony Nixon, Project Director at Rossendale Radio, said: “We can’t afford to keep it open by ourselves so for us to be seriously interested in using the building as part of our plans there’d need to be half a dozen other groups involved too. We need to move really quickly to get Rossendale Radio on air so already have plans elsewhere for our main studio facility – but that wouldn’t rule out using the Mary Hindle Centre for other parts of our project, for example delivering radio training courses.”

The board of Community Action Rossendale meets next Monday (17 August) to formally announce the end of their involvement with the building – formerly the New Thorn Pub – which they opened nine years ago. Last week the current user groups, including a video-training and production unit and a youth club, were told it is to shut. It’s thought the running costs for the building are around £30,000 per year.

Mr Nixon added: “I’m really clear that this will only work if there are enough projects and businesses to collectively run the building and source funding to keep it open initially. My priority at the moment is launching Rossendale Radio, but it’d be a shame for this facility to close so I’m inviting interested parties to come forward.”

The meeting is taking place at the Mary Hindle Centre on Bury Road, Haslingden at 2pm on Thursday 13 August. Anyone interested in the idea should email tony@rossendaleradio.co.uk

To be fair, the press release was sent in to me on Monday evening. I'd only just got chance to publish it yesterday evening.

Whilst it may be short notice for some, I think it had to be due to the urgency of the meeting.

Hopefully a good outcome can come off the meeting and I'll try and keep everyone updated.
