Goodbye local shops, another faceless supermarket shed which will soon be surrounded by a wilderness of decay. Have you seen how three supermarkets in Leyland have killed the high street? Could the Council not see this happening - boarded up shops in what was the Town Centre now a no go area as the ferral yoofs have moved in, intimidating the few remaining unsuspecting shoppers.

We'll only know what we've lost when it's gone and by then we'll be shopping in Tesco, dressed in Tesco clothes, driving Tesco cars, run on Tesco fuel, insured by Tesco insurance, going on Tesco Hoidays, the only consolation is that we'll probably also all work for Tesco/Morrisons/Asda...

I agree, but Rammy's a bit of a special case, don't you think? More of a tourist destination than a local town, in my opinion. A lot of the "high street" shops are specialist, high value outlets geared up to take the tourist pound: not your usual butcher/baker/etc. Bacup's about the same size, but hasn't got the attractions, unfortunately.

Really? I am quite pleased about this TBH, I would rather have a Morrisons in Bacup than another betting shop any day.

Re: Morrison’s store for Bacup?

the CoOp has owned the Horaces site for a number of years to try to land lock any development, they have been forced to sell the land but have put a covenant on that it can't be used ffor a supermarket or food store, it will now be part of the car park ! what it does mean though is that the front of the supermarket will now NOT face Irwell Street and the front of the Taylor & Hargreaves, Irwell mill which was to be retained and used will now not be and the frontage could be towards Henrietta street.

I agree but the people visiting the facility are there for the sport not to go shopping. They already have their sporting gear and I think some go to Rose and Bowl for grub. There is a bike shop at Rawtenstall too for bike gear etc

Re: Morrison’s store for Bacup?

there are 2 charity shops, the rspca and trinity church.
i think it will be great to have another supermarket in bacup... i do a shop for tins etc in asda and tesco, buy bread mainly from either co op or one stop, my meat and veg are from the shops on the front cos they are good quality and dont go off in 2 days...
might have an novelty effect as bacup folk try it out but quality and customer service will come back to the local shops...
the oly folk that do a full shop in the co op are the folk that have no transport to go elsewhere.

This^^^

Bacup is pretty much dire, have you tried buying the latest CD, Book or xbox game here?
I honestly only ever use the Newsagents here, and maybe the Co-Op for a loaf when i run out, but for the weekly shopping, clothes etc i HAVE to travel out of town.
Dont blame the Supermarket for killing Bacup, this place died a long time ago and for some reason its legs are still twitching.

And a few jobs avaliable in Bacup....We should get the red carpet out for them imho.
