thats a bit bleak upset??
ive lived in bacup since i got wed 15 years ago, moved up from stacksteads. yes its not as busy as it used to be but i love that everyone knows everyone, a 5 minute walk up any hill takes you into the countryside, tbh if i could get clothes in bacup i probably wouldnt anyway cos part of the fun of shopping is going somewhere to make a day of it.
thelmas has been going for some years now, some stalls on the wednesday market sell clothes, as for cds i download them now anyway.
im proud to live in bacup and enjoy having a stroll around the centre on a sunny day like day, it might only take 20 minutes to get what i need but i can spend another hour catching up with folk i aint seen in ages.

Re: Morrison’s store for Bacup?

It is a bit bleak, but its true...

How many take aways are there in this town?

I think its 7 just in the town centre itself, you will struggle to buy anything but the basics here, the market is slowly rotting and there is nothing to keep the shopper here.

OH, we have plenty of Hairdressers as well....

Honestly, how many small company's (bar take aways and hair dressers lol) can you name that have set up in Bacup and flourished in the last 10 years?

I bet i can name more that have failed.

Bacup, great for a take away or a haircut....

Bleak yes, and tbh Rawtenstall is heading the same way....

Re: Morrison’s store for Bacup?

First thing rawtenstall needs in the town centre is a Valley visitors centre with info on Rossendales heritage and countryside also something along the lines of a miniture winfields outlet things that give the town centre som purpose and as for waterfoot! That betting shop on the corner is a discrace and shame on RBC for allowing it, totally inappropriate!

I honestly only ever use the Newsagents here, and maybe the Co-Op for a loaf when i run out, but for the weekly shopping, clothes etc i HAVE to travel out of town.
Dont blame the Supermarket for killing Bacup, this place died a long time ago and for some reason its legs are still twitching.

And a few jobs avaliable in Bacup....We should get the red carpet out for them imho.
Yes Upset but if people don't buy things locally then the shops will close. You don't mention the bakers, the butchers, the veg shop etc. There did used to be a music/electrical shop, a Woolies, an iron mongers, a stationers etc but because people didn't use them they closed. A town cannot possibly stock everything and expect to retain its unique identity. So no use moaning about a place if you don't patronise it and still expect the shops just to be there for convenience sake.

Re: Morrison’s store for Bacup?

I remember Hollies(sp) record store where the Zebra crossing is, i bought the Now 1 TAPE!! from there, and Woolies at the bottom of Lane Head, the Bike shop up Tod road, got my first BMX from there and Henry Kerons...I used to use the shops in Bacup, from the Stationers that was next to the Red Chilli to the Record store on the market, the Video store that went into Woolies and Sandys on the front...And my parents never went out of Bacup for the shopping...
But now you cant get a Book, CD, DVD from this town, if you use the CO OP for a weekly shop you will pay a lot more than Asda or Tesco, and if you go there you can get book etc.
I honestly feel that there isnt the population in Bacup that will spend money in shops that offer "limited" services, and tbh its a shame.
With the town centre looking like a half boarded up takeaway who is going to come along and think "wow, this place looks like somewhere my business can thrive"

I would love to be able to get the majority of things i need from Bacup, but as it is i HAVE to travel out of town for all but the very basics.
