Empty Bacup nightclub to make way for store.

A VACANT nightclub which has become a magnet for criminals will be demolished.

Plans to open a new supermarket on the land of the former Horrace’s nightclub have also been announced this week.

The Bacup eyesore became a police priority after residents reported an increase in anti-social behaviour and car crime.

Rossendale Borough Council, leader Tony Swain said: “The council has agreed to sell a piece of land near the property to make way for a new supermarket.

“We are confident the new owners will submit their plans for the site soon, before the structure is destroyed and cleared to make way for the new business.”

The council could not disclose which supermarket had acquired the property – but it is understood that Morrison’s has recently purchased the land. The nearest large supermarket is in Rawtenstall.

A police report highlighted that the poor lighting around the venue and overgrown shrubs throughout the old car park provide a hotspot for potential car criminals.

The club was a snooker hall before it become one of two nightclubs in the town.

In 1993 the doors of Horace’s nightclub were closed and the property became derelict.

Coun Christine Lamb said: “It is a blight on the town and it would be really nice to see it developed. The building does not look good in Bacup.”

A request has been made to Rossendale Borough Council by police for the street lighting to be fixed, the shrubs to be cut back and area given a general

Re: Morrison’s store for Bacup?

The end of more local shops such as the Butchers, veg shop and some of the Deli stores. Not good IMO but then the Co-op are pricey but I support them because of their support for the environment and animal welfare/WWT (which the other stores don't seem to care about).
Has any supermarket chain actually helped regenerate a town? I can put up with the 'unsightly' building if it means that local business and diversity survives.

Re: Morrison’s store for Bacup?

got to agree with Elcie. another supermarket isnt needed in Bacup, all it will do is take the trade away from the local shops. and depending how hard Morrisons go with there prices maybe even close down one of the other two stores there.

got to say yet again the council are just looking at half the problem, as long as they get there cut i guess they will be happy.

Re: Morrison’s store for Bacup?

I personaly only use the supermarket for things I can't buy in my local shops.

I use the local butcher every week and always buy my bread etc from the local bakers. I go into town and use the market for my vedg and deli stuff but once a month I go to the supermarket for the rest of it.

It all depends on how you do your shopping and if you have the time to do this. Only time will tell if the supermarket moving into Bacup will affect the smaller shops but then again sometimes it's far too late when the little shops have gone
