Re: waste vegetable oil

Broom Broom....

I think you will find it hard to find a chippy where they do not sell their old oil or use it themselves.

I think the days of getting old oil for nowt to make your own biofuel are long gone unfortunately.

Good luck searching.

Re: waste vegetable oil

I had a mate at work tried it, he ended up just buying biofuel but if you can get a free supply then it would mean free motoring for a long while (or until it knackers the engine lol).

any engine pre 2000/2001,diesel will in efect run off veg oil, providing it is indirect injection, and it has a bosch fuel pump ,ie all mechanical,mr benz designed the diesel engine to run on veg oil and not diesel, there are a lot of problems associated in running on waste v oil, but you can go to aldi or where ever buy it and throw it in,wvo has to be dewatered ,cleaned and sievedprior to use ,it also in winter has to be thinned due to its ability to thicken up and in doing so cause asssociated problems with air in the system, adding petrol to thin it also causes problems to the hoses, lets put it this way youve got to know your fuel system, mine is not complicated, the oil actually lubricates the system, you have to be on your toes any deviation as in complacency will create problems, trust me ive had em, if you look after it it will look after you, as for bio that is not free from its problems, the process is or can be volotile to say the least

ummmmm diesel ,to my mind diesel doesnt stop it thickening up ,however petrol does, adding diesel raises the cetane level ,ive done it in mine ,certainly running on oil stops all the knocking and gives a quieter engine, running 100 pc oil in winter can cause problems especially if petrol or other thinners are not added,up to 10 pc ,the oil i collect is filtered down to 5 microns in warmer weather , and 1 micron in winter, im trying to change my system at present but if it works why try and mend it,.

Re: Waste vegetable oil

deisel freezes ,at what temp i dont know, but oil thickens up miles before deisel,so adding it helps keep it thin in winter.last years winter got down to minus 13 on my site, the all terrain fork truck stopped running as deisel had froze,my truck kept going.
adding petrol to deisel is recomended anyway for winter running.

Re: Waste vegetable oil

And you can make 2500 litres before the government want their cut.

Cheaper motoring.

Or is it? Vegetable oil is 1.52 per litre at Asda.

If I did more than 14 miles a day AND had a garage AND a diesel car I'd be looking into it myself.

Re: Waste vegetable oil

my set up is outside and settles in 205 litre drums at ambiant temp ,it normally settles there for about a month or longer which allows the solids to drop out to the bottom having already been put through a 25 or bigger sock, the freezingpoint of diesel is i think about 18 /23? if the solids have dropped out ,then the oil is less likely to ,thicken when petrol added,i used to get a lot of rape seed oil, brilliant stuff now with the recession every body is going for the cheap stuff and its full of palm oil /nasty stuff/ive got a pile of it all solid but i give it the bio lads they make good bio from it, last year i ran mine on 5pc petrol and it worked a treat although starting was a bit lumpy ,need to change glow plugs this year, i use a web site ,vegetableoildiesel xmb and asked about mixing diesel with wvo , and was told that it mixes with the oil, ive reid it in a jam jar ,however petrol and other thinners do thin the oil out, tried it at 10 pc and my car lost power, still if it works for you
