I try and recycle as much as possible, we've now got 4 wheely bins for various stuff. However, when I get a something with the recycling logo on it and it's not clear which bin it should go in, I put it in the one I think most appropriate, we have one for bottles, tins plastic and I tend to put plastic cartons in here if its got a recycle mark on it. I do object though when I get it wrong I get a rather curt note through the door telling me off. Surely they should be saying well done sir for trying to recycle everthing possible, but we can't recycle that here yet. Thank you for your efforts

They don't leave notes for people who thrown recycleable stuff in the general waste bin, 'You've thrown several glass bottle away why have you not recycled them'

Why do they take this attitute towards the people who are at least trying?

Re: The Bin Men/women

Which recycling logo are you referring to?

If its just the triangular arrows saying it can be recycled rather than a 1 or 2 in a triangle then what you are actually doing is contaminating not only what is in your bin but possibly the entire wagon full of recyclable plastics.

A single contamination can cause an entire bale of plastics to be discarded and end up in landfill, the recycling co's are on such tight restrictions etc that they will reject a bale rather than sort through it individually.

I do wish they would publish more information on what can and cannot be recycled, for instance can a Marmite jar (black glass) be recycled?

Most Yoghurt cartons cannot as they are blown polystyrene, tetrapaks say they can be but like many counties - there are no tetrapak recycling plants around here.

Our council can only recycle stuff that the nearby plants have facilities for and this is plastics 1 & 2 (PET & HDPE) or glass/tins etc.
And when something that is not in the list is added to the recycling then they lose out because it gets the whole bale rejected so they have to pay to put it in landfill - hence the curt letters. AFAIK they really do want to help you understand what can and cannot be recycled.

Rossendale do not seem to be hitting those that throw away recyclables hard as yet but it will come one day, perhaps when we have run out of holes in the ground to fill.

The re-cyclin nazis are here....

"Why did you put this brown bottle in the bin marked glass? you will be re-educated until you get your mind straight...."

We're never gonna run out of holes to tip stuff in, we dig stuff up, make it into somethin usefull, use it, then tip it back into the hole that we created diggin it up in the first place, it's perfect.

I worked in the plastic packaging industry for years and believe me your old tomato sauce bottle or yoghurt carton will never ever be recycled it will go straight to landfill here or possibly China where they have less regulation.

Re: The Bin Men/women

Just wish our binmen would put our bins back where we leave them.
We always make a point of leaving them up against our garden wall to make sure there is enough space for pushchairs or wheelchairs to pass unhindered.
They get left blocking the footpath and usually our driveway too - it infuriates me to have to park up on the road to move the bins before I can park on the drive.

Perhaps I should have posted this on here instead : Little things that annoy me. But I am coming across as a grumpy old bovine on there.

Re: The Bin Men/women

LET are saying that the new county council are looking at reopening closed recycling centres at Great Harwood and Colne.
It's a shame but no surprise that Stacksteads isn't in the frame for this so it looks like my nearest centres for disposal of waste will continue to be Todmorden followed by Rochdale with the far side of Haslingden a distant 3rd.
Not bad when a resident of Rossendale who pays a sizeable amount every year to Lancashire CC. can travel to GM or WY quicker than a waste centre in his own borough.

Re: The Bin Men/women

For a recycling centre to work and for the community to recycle effectively then the recycling centre needs to be accessible by the community - not a fair old drive away.

I reckon the amount of recyclable stuff that has not been recycled in that area has risen considerably since the closures.

Re: The Bin Men/women

EIGHTY-SIX bins could be scrapped across the valley and seven recycling sites abolished under a major review of street cleansing.

Council considers scrapping 86 Rossendale bins (From Lancashire Telegraph)

.... Further consideration may also be given to the removal of dog waste bins...Surely that will give more people more excuses not to scoop the poop

- Could those who receive Community Order sentences from the courts not be drafted in for street cleansing and environmental clean-up projects ?
