Re: Mountain bike racing at Lee Quarry

Racing starts at 10:00 but the quarry should be busy from 09:00

If you are going to watch why not marshal? its helps put the event on and we do our best to look after you.

full details brownbacksracing.co.uk we are also still taking entries on the day

I don't want to get drawn into a protracted arguement about use of the quarry. We are keen to work with all users. Our events are deliberately short so that we do not take over the site for too long and unreasonably reduce others access. All we ask in return is that they give us the space to operate for the small window of time we need.

A more general point is that walking with/ without dogs on the new trails is going to cause some issues as in places mountain bikers will be travelling at speed and will not be expecting to come across people on the trail and will have little room to maneovre due to where the trails have been cut in. The "rights and wrongs" are probably best discussed elsewhere suffice it to say that a lot of money has been invested in new purpose built trails. These trails are attracting a lot of visitors to the valley from far and wide. Surely we should see this as a success and use the rest of this large site for walking/ dog exercising etc rather than insisting on walking the thin ribbon of trails made for mountainbike use. Just a thought.

Re: Mountain bike racing at Lee Quarry

Wish you all the best and hope its a nice day, the valley needs more sports events like this even if it does upset the odd dogger or nag straddler.

Cheers Paul

Re: Mountain bike racing at Lee Quarry

Just a Quick Question?

what are the duties for the marshals...

only asking as i can normally be found in an orange suit at the side of a race track marshaling the 4 wheeled variety of racing waving multi coloured flags at the drivers - but i'm only 2 mins away from the quarry so may be able to help out

Re: Mountain bike racing at Lee Quarry

The 2009 race season is underway and the first round of the Hope Race Series at Lee Quarry Rossendale is getting nearer. Here’s an update of what’s happening as the 19th April fast approaches. Entry levels are good and we are still accepting entries on the day. Registration opens at 08:30.

Sponsors and prize lists:
The overall sponsor Hope has put up some great prizes for the overall series winners as well as providing the custom cut disks for the winners trophies. With a Vision 4 led, a Tech X2 brakeset and the brand new SP XC6 wheelset (not even in the shops yet!) up for grabs for the overall. Leisure Lakes have dug deep to support the racer category with a total of £300 of vouchers up for grabs at each race including a first lap prime of £25. Ride-On and Max Gear are providing the prizes for the “Weekend Warriors” and “Have-a-go Hero’s” with a great products and vouchers for the winners. There are also some “fun” prizes including a singlespeed trophy and crud catchers for the riders who can’t keep it clean!

Course:
The laps are about 4.5 km and include some stiff climbs. The course comprises fast open track, a big bermy rollercoaster section and long sections of fast technical singletrack. The trails are very technical in places and include a few points where they are quite rocky or exposed.

Most of the course is on the Red trails at Lee Quarry, the Have-a-go Hero’s will not be racing the more technical parts of the quarry trails. The trail centre is open all year round but please note the course will not be marked for practice on Saturday. We strongly recommend that you pre-ride the course on race day especially if you have never been to the quarry before.
Please note that we have a strict “no assistance” rule which includes technical support and feeding for all categories.

Schedule:
08:30 Registration opens
09:30 Course marked and marshalled.
09:40 Registration closes
10:00 Racer category start
10:10 Weekend Warrior category start
10:20 Have-a-go Hero category start
11:30 Bell for last lap
12:15 Prize Presentations

Timings may vary slightly on the day.

Facilities:
Toilets are provided at the event village, which is about 400m from the start.
There is no running water on-site, please bring plenty with you.
There is parking at the Kingfisher Centre and on the adjacent roads in Futures Park, please car share/ park sensibly to ensure everyone can get on-site. Some areas will be marked as “no parking” to ensure access for emergency vehicles, please respect the signs.
First aid cover is provided by the Rossendale And Pendle Mountain Rescue Team and they will be sited within the quarry.
Leisure Lakes and hopefully Hope and Ride-On will have stands offering race support.
We should have 3 professional photographers lurking around so make sure you keep smiling!

Onsite Catering:
The event village will have a coffee and cake vendor, there is a café and a pub opposite the main entrance and the Rose ‘n Bowl Stacksteads is recommended for a post race pub meal.

Series Details:
Race categories are based on ability (Have-a-go Hero- Weekend Warrior- Racer) sorry but no under 18’s for this series.

The winner of each category will get a trophy. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each category. There will also be series prizes for the overall winner in each category, with the best 3 results to count.
The racing is BC sanctioned, but please read our rules. There are no ranking points available.

Directions:
Full directions are available on the website (brownbacksracing.co.uk) and the entrance to Futures Park will be signed.

Marshals wanted! We can’t do it without you. Get in touch with us at info@brownbacksracing.co.uk if you can help. We even offer a free £50 cash draw, a hot drink and anything else we can manage to get for you. You need to be on-site by 09:00.

Re: Mountain bike racing at Lee Quarry

MARSHALS!
We are busy planning for race 1 and want to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
To help us we need marshals, we have some volunteers already but not enough to make us comfortable that we can cover the full course on the day.
If you are bringing friends and family to watch it would be ideal for us if some of them could be persuaded to act as a course marshal. Details of what it involves are below, its not onerous, it gets you involved and it means that we can include some of the best bits of the quarry trails in the course.

Marshalling is a rewarding and entertaining way to support your local
community and mtb racing....... well I would say that I need people to
marshal.

Essentially we need responsible people to assist in managing the event. The
Position will be on the course where you will indicate the correct way to go for
the riders, signal if there is a hazard ahead (cool yellow flag provided)
and call for first aid assistance should a rider need it (radio provided).
You will be asked to wear a rather stylish yellow waistcoat (with "Marshal" on the back) and will be given a radio to talk to the race organisers (really nice people) with.
To help, you get a full briefing and all the necessary equipment and
hopefully a bit of food and drink. We ask that you turn up at 09:00 and be
prepared to stay to the end 12:30ish. You will need to make sure that you
can cope with Bacup weather (4 seasons in one day) and be able to walk
about the quarry fairly quickly without assistance.
We hope to be able to liven things up and give you some Swiss cow bells or
something else to cheer the riders on. Or you can bring your own...

If you can turn up earlier and want to assist in the course layout we will appreciate the help. This is likely to be 07:30 for race 1 and 08:00 for subsequent events.

To top it all the "registered" marshals for the day get put into a free
cash prize draw for £50 to say thanks and there is a drink and biscuit from the coffee van. To register you need to be signed on before 09:00 on the day.

Alternatively you can be a "Credit Crunch Racer" full details on the Blog
brownbacksracing.co.uk/view/view_from_the_hill.php

I hope you feel that you can help us. What we do ask is that if you commit to a date you let us know if you aren't coming.

Regards Paul

There is no need to be rude . We are well aware that some people now think they own the routes and have scant regard for existing users or wild life habitats (present company excepted of course ). I was only trying to highlight to those who don't already know that there are still other users in the area who do not have to give way for racing as a point of interest. We do this out of courtesy to other users.

Just to add that I do not use the quarry when racing is on. If I have the time I usually go and watch so yes I may be a dog and horse owner but I do not intentionally try to spoil someone elses fun. I hope you have a good turnout BTW and the weather stays fine.
