'Stormy' Conditions - Monday 10th March

Afternoon all...

I wanted to created a thread on the potential development of what can only be described as a 'storm' for the end of Sunday and into Monday of next week. At this early stage I have refrained from issuing an early weather warning but I am likely to do so either tomorrow or at some point over the weekend.

In the meteorology world this low pressure that will come rattling in off the Atlantic is causing grave cause for concern, it is a low pressure that you would see in the depths of Autumn like in October or November not in March really.

The 'ingredients' that define the depth and power of a low pressure include things like the jet stream and temperature. At this present time the 'ingredients' needed to produce a very powerful low pressure system are present.

There is growing confidence even at this early stage for gales, severe gales and perhaps even storm force winds to combine with a period of heavy rain later in the day on Sunday and into Monday. The main concern most definately being the strength of the winds.

What is extremely important over the coming days is the specific depth and track of this low pressure. For anyone who has any idea of atmospheric pressure at the moment this low pressure might have a central pressure reading of 940mb or below, an incredibly low pressure reading.

If the track and depth of this low pressure continues on the current trend then Rossendale is in for one heck of a battering into early next week, the likes of which may well equal that of January 18th 2007 when widespread damage was reported. It would make the other nights windy weather look like a gentle breeze!...

This feature will continue to be monitored and for safety's sake I do hope the current predictions don't come true!...

....watch this space!....

M.

Re: 'Stormy' Conditions - Monday 10th March

Thanks for the heads up, Matt.

We've got family coming up from Sussex by train, so I hope they won't be too badly affected.

Stay with Rossendale Online for the very latest weather conditions.
I've stickied this thread, so everyone gets a warning.

Batten down the hatches, as they say.

Re: 'Stormy' Conditions - Monday 10th March

I am continuing to refrain from issuing an advance warning at this time because of the continued uncertainty of the track of the low pressure.

It does look as though now that the actual centre of the low pressure will cross Northwest England and this obviously includes Rossendale, as a result we could be looking at one of the lowest atmospheric pressure readings in a many years with values perhaps as low as 950mb, an incredible value for inland parts of the UK.

Strong winds continue to be a threat, but if the low pressure passes over Rossendale what is likely to happen is sort of like a hurricane passing over. Some very strong winds will arrive initially along with some heavy rain, but as the low pressure passes overhead the winds will drop away to become very light in comparison but are then likely to pick up as the low pressure clears away.

There is a large degree of uncertainty still over the track of this system and that is what will make all the difference. If the low pressure passes overhead then the strongest winds will likely miss the Valley and the Midlands for example would be getting battered as we experience light winds.

The track is critical. I'll bring further updates and warnings if needed through the weekend, it is my weekend off from work this weekend so i'll post any additional information when I can...

M.

Cheers Matt.
They were saying on the BBC Weather this morning, about the possibility of strong gales on Sunday night.

I sat there thinking, I already knew that 3 days ago.

Re: 'Stormy' Conditions - Monday 10th March

Still on cards for a period of very strong winds overnight and during the early hours, gusts between 40 and 50mph are expected between 1am and 5am tomorrow. At the moment they don't look strong enough to cause any major problems, but the wind direction will be southerly, which is an usual direction to have such strong wind speeds, this may well bring unusual problems to certain buildings/trees.

The afternoon will see relatively light winds as the low pressure passes over, anyone with a working barometer take not of the pressure at about 3 to 6pm tomorrow, it will probably be showing a pressure reading you won't record again for a very long time.

Winds on Tuesday night and into Wednesday are a cause for concern and at the moment may well pose a more significant threat than tomorrow's winds at this present time.

M.

NB: Lee depending on what happens over the coming days, perhaps the name of this thread can be renamed to cover this week in general, that way anyone with any comments or reports on tomorrows system and then mid-week can do rather than having 2 seperate threads running.

Perhaps 'This Weeks Stormy Weather - 10th - 14th March'
