Cold Snap - Fri 21st - Sun 23rd Nov 08 - Reports & Comments

It has been quite a few weeks since we saw any significant cold weather, the last time was during the highly unseasonal cold spell at the end of October which brough some very early snow and also some quite potent frosts for the time of year.

Well as I mentioned in the weekly forecast on Sunday the weather is set to turn significantly colder by the end of the week albeit even if it is only for a relatively short time period.

Temperatures are set to plummet during the day on Friday with then a widespread and penetrating frost on Friday night. It is quite a few years since the intensity of cold that is coming up has been evident during a November month, the winds are going to be coming straight from the north so a real arctic cold feed is on the way.

At the moment overnight temperatures on Friday are expected to drop to -3C but with a continued moderate to fresh northerly wind overnight, it will feel more like -10C. Temperatures are set to only just climb above freezing on Saturday before then another cold night on Saturday night.

The Valley never does very well for snow in a northerly wind simply because we are sheltered by the extensive landmass to our north and east, so don't expect a lot of snow from this setup. A few flurries are possible at times and the change to milder conditions during Sunday may bring a bit of snow for a time on Sunday morning at the moment.

In essence dig out the winter woollies once again, grab those walking boots and hats and get ready to enjoy a cold, bitter, crisp but very sunny late autumn weekend!

Full weekend forecast as ever will be available on Friday, any reports and comments you have on the cold weather when it arrives please post anything about it in here...

Regards, Matt.

Re: Cold Snap - Fri 21st - Sun 23rd Nov 08 - Reports & Comments

Morning all...

Cold spell just around the corner now, things are becoming very interesting indeed given the longer term weather patterns. There really is something 'different' about the build up to the winter this year with quite considerable changes to what we would normally expected (mild, wet and windy), the outlook for the remainder of November is cold and quite raw with overnight frosts and potentially wintry conditions as well.

Without going into the depths of what it means take a look at the below link, it shows a graph of temperature for Manchester over the coming 14 days, as can be clearly seen the mean (solid white line) is well below the average (solid red line) for large portions of the outlook period;

We are long over due a half decent winter and the weather patterns in the build up to this one are certainly making meteorologists everywhere tingle with excitment at the prospect of the first properly cold and snowy winter in quite a few years. As ever only time will tell mind but the early signs now really are positive.

Matt.

Re: Cold Snap - Fri 21st - Sun 23rd Nov 08 - Reports & Comments

Well the colder weather is now setting in as a result quite a strange situation this morning in that the temperature is actually continuing to fall during the morning unlike what should normally happen and that is obviously rise.

At 5am the temperature was 6.8C and 6am it was 6.3C and now at 9am it is 5.4C

Wrap up warm...

Matt.
